yeah theres 2 different shapes
i think it changed when 12volt bugs started
old 6 volt front gaurds have an indent where the running board meets them

later 12volt running boards are contoured to match the gaurd and the gaurd is smooth

the chrome strip is different too but thats just a cosmetic thing
pre 67 had the fat chrome strip
68-72 had the medium strip and 73 on had the real thin one

Most new running boards come with wide stainless strip strips...

although My Sons running boards He bought about 25+ years ago had thin aluminium strips...
they dent easy...

I am going to put the wide stainless ones on My running boards one day...
if only they had come with the holes...
I hate drilling new holes in things...

and something I hadn't noticed Joel...
the running board indent on the early guards...
that have disappeared on the later guards...

cheers

Lee

me and a mate found that out by accident when we fitted the running boards of his 64 onto his 70 and had this big gap at the front where they met the guards

i see ppl making the same mistake time and time again with those stainless look (yes there just chrome metal not stainless grab a magnet see for urself) louvered running boards

nobody seems to realise they are meant to go over the top of factory running boards, they are not a replacement running board
thats why there paper thin and just fall off when the kids step on them and also have no mounting holes
