Real world stuff, its harder than typing
I am typing here with dirty finger nails.
I did something unusual for myself these days.....
went out into the garage and worked underneath the Car this evening.
- checking for reasons for poor shifting- was hoping loose gearbox mount.
Fruitless search. I fear my gearbox is Stuffed.....................
-
Should have stuck to the computer,
easier to work on the problems in cyber space.

nah, you should see the meltdown on newbeetle.org.
Recent blow in reactionary right wing forces have forced two of the most prolific posters (who also happen to be gay and probably left wing) to leave
the .org. In addition, someone has substituted an Evil Bitch for one of the other most prolific posters, driving even more people away.
I reckon getting close and personal with grease has to be better than that.

The mechanic suggested a Very slow shift approach - give the synchro a chance to turn the gear.
Helps a little , but alas the gearbox will have to be spares....
Never had a sychro die on me before, I'm very hard on the geaboxes but they are up to the punishment.
I guess the parts are getting Very old now , at 35 years for the gearbox - looks like I'll have to spend the money they deserve and Fix them
properly

im a proud gearbox killer from hell.
My synchros get bent and broken before they have time to wear out. Only broken 1 gear though. But there was the time when I forgot to put oil in the
box.

Thats 1800 kombi second gear set.
I dont know what its problem was. That box and I used to get on so well. OK we had our ups and downs, every now and then in a moment of weakness
I'd get reverse instead of second. Sometimes I'd get overexcited and prematurely change. But on the whole we had fun. We'd flat change
with 18psi boost. Never without sufficient foreplay, driving around the pits warming brakes. Then one day at Bathurst she just spat the dummy. A big
bang followed by nasty rumbling and she was gone. No warnings whatsoever.
Not to worry. Her loss. Now I'm using someone elses box, and he doesnt even mind! we havent quite figured out each other yet, still fumbling
around in the dark. She's got totally different ratios with a huge 1st, not at all what I am used to. Hopefully at nambucca we will click and not
have to use 3rd at all.

Twas love at first shift...but alas she's gone.
Thats quite impressive Type 4 gearbox, so they are not "unbreakable ".

shit no. hellbug built heaps of them for some guy in darwin. A mud racer or something. With those big paddle tyres. You have to be pretty brutal
though and have no respect. I dont think you would ever break one on a street tyred street car.
