Who's cars have been legal.

i have been reading some of the comments through the forum and wish to know what cars were actually legal in obtaining the Gene Berg trophy through out the past years.
if we have weights and formulas then can we tell who really obtained the trophy legally....., and are they fudged, i am sure there will be someone who will have some thoughts on this. does being after market inside really substantiate being a volkswagen, its like having an after market case with just vw stuff in it. or having a vw case with all the s&*t inside and added externally.
what are the foundations for the Gene Berg trophy, i believe that you dont fudge to obtain.
So who has a list of cars that were legally rego'd with turbos and the like.

curious.

I would suggest that no-one bites. This sounds like it could be contentious issue, and if non-inflammatory comments can be made and accepted, then we will see what happens to the post.

I must have missed something, this topic must have been debated before I started looking at the forums. I am actually really interested in who and in what car has won it back in the 90's, I was a teenager then an too interested in looking at big stereos, simmons wheels and aero guards on bugs to pay any attention to the drags!

Can someone list who it was awared to in each year? Obvioulsy there is some dispute over this, but just interested, opinions aside.

Cheers

rufbug
what's legal?
in who's eyes?
in what state?
by who's rules?

if you can answer these questions than we have a problem because that would be your opinion and others will not agree.

if you can't answer these questions than what do we do?

I think that we should just build fast cars for fun and support each other instead of building cars for our ego's.

Rufbug, this topic is not clear to the point.

What exactly is the question in this topic that you refer to?

Please put a ? question mark after the question to help enable us to distinguish which bit is your question and which bit is opinion.

Just trying to help.

If you are asking ppl who won what and if it was fair and legal, you are stirring the pot.

Most of these ppl are still around.

Asking ppl to fess up is silly....'oh yeah I used a (insert cheat here) to screw everyone' just aint going to happen.

Asking ppl to out others is speculative and possibly ends up as slander etc. So that will get the post closed.

The guts of the argument revolve around the legalities of a whole lot of classes, street legal or special plate, what year and and and etc etc etc.

Many beers have been filtered to conversations about this stuff, but you wont hear it here as it will turn to argument.

Good fishing though

Who's Gene Berg?

Now that is the real tragedy.

He'd have been ashamed to see the amount of bitching that went on about this.

Can someone in the know please cough up the results...and have the backbone to declare Wayne Penrose as the last winner...whether he was in their club/clique or not?

Gene Berg Trophy Drag Race Rules

The Gene Berg Trophy is a perpetual award, presented to the driver of the FASTEST ROAD REGISTERED VW. As there may be some confusion over exactly what is a "road registered" car, the following rules have been implemented.

1. The vehicle must be registered. That is the chassis and engine numbers must match up with the registration papers, sticker and plates. This can be checked by the scrutineers.

2. The cooling system must be intact. The cylinder tin, fan housing and fan must be fitted, although the fan belt may be removed for a run.

3. The best time only in "racing" will be counted.

4. The vehicle must run on pump petrol, for example leaded super, or standard or hi octane unleaded. No exotic chemistry allowed.

5. Street tyres must be run .No drag slicks are allowed. Road tyres must have a minimum of 1.5 mm tread.

6. Fitting of the rear seat and rear seat belts is optional but both front seats and belts must be fitted.

7. Fibreglass mudguards, bonnets, whale tails and spoilers are allowed, but the body and doors must be factory steel.

8. No perspex windows are allowed, all windows must be glass.

9. The spare wheel must be fitted for safety reasons.

10. Exhaust design is unlimited except that it must meet the track noise requirements.

11. Vehicles for this class must be able to be driven on the street in the normal manner. If scrutineers are in any doubt, you may be required to complete a 15 km drive.

As the last winner of the trophy and the first watercooled I'd love to add some of my thoughts .

When the original concept of the Gene Berg trophy came out it was pretty much a scene dominated by Carbys . There were few turbo cars and even fewer with injection , the last few years has seen aftermarket ecu's become cheaper , easier to tune and a lot more readily available . The same goes for roller bearing turbo's . I think the development for N/A Air cooled motors has almosted peaked , if it hasnt there is little more than can be done without getting into big $$$$ . Then there is a question of reliability .

The S3 back then had a chip and DV valve , nothing else it was driven to the track , driven home and back to daily driving duties for the wife on Monday . Since then its had a bigger turbo fitted and some other modifications but its still a daily driver . I drove it to Warwick , wife raced it and I drove it back down to Sydney . To me thats what the Gene Berg trophy was all about .

And as for changing the name etc . I beleive that Gene Berg gave his life to VW . Out of respect I personally would like his name to remain on the trophy . The rules should be changed to accomodate the advances in technology and the law .

I know some of you wont agree with me but these are just my views

I find this confusing because...does it mean that turbo, supercharged or gas cars can compete against carby cars ?:?:

It seams weird because Bergs didn't promote power added engines... to my knowledge anyhow?
