Volksrod info

Hi to one and all.

I've recently been introduced to the volksrod concept and I'm totally won over. I've been thinking of doing a project of some sort for the past 5 years now but after seeing a handful of pics, I now know what that project is going to be.

My problem is that I've been searching online for any info, guides or plans for such a project and thus far I've come up empty handed. I need some technical info I guess. I have no doubt in my abilities, just need some info on the whole matter.

Am I dreaming....can anyone help?

Cheers,

Grant

At the risk of sounding like a fool, I've established the fact that I beam suspension is one item I'd be needing. Where can I source one from, are they from a particular model car etc. The roof chop I don't have a major drama with...at this stage, it's more the front end aspect of it. I'm still trying to work out what 'beam extensions' are but I'm figuring they're tied in with the suspension somewhere along the way.
Like I said earlier, purely a project and I'm keen to learn as I go but just finding it hard to find info as oppossed to photos on the subject. I might add, the photos have been invaluable as questions have already been answered.

Thanx for your interest

the beauty of rods is there is no rule or how to book it's purely your imagination and what you want not what someone else reackons you should build so start where you feel confadent and go from there as most of us lost soles the happy snaps are a good place to start find something that floats ya boat and just build as for front end extensions if ya like them as the rod gets closer to being finished and i am being liberal here because they are never finished
so find it cut it weld it and as they say we don't need no stinking paint

Thanx for the reply. Unfortunately it doesn't really answer any of my questions. I don't intend to outright copy off a design but like most things in life, there are some basic rules and guides. I appreciate your free thinking approah but I'm keen not too replicate something Hower simpson might come up with. I don't want to start ripping pieces apart until I've looked alot closer at what it is I'm supposed to be ripping apart without causing potential dramas down the track.

I guess I'm more of the 'slow and steady wins the race' kinda guy.

http://www.volksrod.com  has all the answers you need. At http://www.volksrods.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1600  there is all the technical information links you need to answer 99% of your questions. Great bunch of advice available specifically for people doing volksrods.

I use aussieveedubbers to then get the Australian context which is needed for dealing with our roads, standards etc.

I am also in the process at looking at doing one, just need to get an early 60's car to get it all started..... bloody hard in Canberra.

Checkout http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=53372  for an Australian example.

Hi and thank you for the info. I have checked out volksrod.com.but failed to see the link you refer to. I shall check again. Also I have already saved your forum to my favourites. It's an excellent guide so to speak. Well done to you. It looks great! In fact it's people like you that inspire me.
As for street legal, that's something I want to try and acheive. You have set me in the right direction and for that I thank you.

Good luck in the future and you may just hear from me again.

It would appear that the volksrod forum is currently offline and thats why you can't get the link working.

What city are you in?

Keep trying I guess.

thanx for the support. I guess the most nagging questions I have are
1/ What would be the prefered car year to go for or doesn't it really matter
2/ This I-beam suspension. What model car are they ripped out of?
3/ What are they refering to exaclty when they mention a 'beam extension'?
4/ Is there anywhere in Melbourne that I might be able to see a volksrod close up?
And that's just for starters.

Once again thanx for your interest.

Hi flexyourhead, the I beam style front ends are commonly found under early fords .ie 1928 A models up to the 1948 Fords ,however these days most rodders use aftermarket axles which are available in a variety of drops depending on how low you want your car to sit,an use either 4 bar setups or hairpins to replace the old style radius rods that ford used to locate the axle. These front end setups are available from most of the hotrod supply places like RODTECH in SA,or Rod City in Melboune ,also HOT ROD HARDWARE IN MELBOURNE,try google for adress and webs etc,.Bear in mind these setups dont come cheap, about $4,000 is the norm with all the shiny bits and there will be a fair bit of fabrication involved tio get it into a bug,try looking on the SO-CAL LOOK VW website that should give you some ideas, have fun, cheers mick

Thank you Mick. That's exactly what I was after. I have actually started looking on the rod sites and I did find the I beam set ups for sale but I'm still grateful for the extra info. Bear with me folks.....this creation will slowly come together.
