4AGE conversion?

no im not doing one.....well not yet.

just interested.

my housemate has an 84 toyota sprinter with a 20 valve 4AGE silvertop engine. it has aftermarket wolf 3d computer, quad throttle bodies and a decent exhuast.

another freind of mine had an old fastback celica with a 16 valve 4AGE with wild cams heaps of head work and balanced bottom end etc that would revv to 9500 it had big side draught webbers on it.

both cars were very quick for a 1.6 litre NA motor and the engine doesnt look very long why arent people doing these conversions.

anyone know what a frontcut is worth?

Nick

There is a red Twincab Kombi getting around the Northside with a 4AGE motor in it.....its not real flash in a kombi, it goes alright, but if you went to the trouble of an engine transplant you'd want a bit more. But in a Beetle it would probably be alright. Not much torque down low, but it revs.

4ags are great motors. Especially the blown 16 valves. Can't find a stronger factory 1.6. The problem is, they're an iron block. So I'm guessing for the same weight or less an EJ22 would produce more power and torque for less weight and $$$. They are also getting older now. If you want to go to all the trouble of an engine swap and mod plate etc, make it worth while and go forced induction or big cubes. ;)

get a 4agze, if you can

I've got a 4agze in my kombi, and its a real easy fit.
Just had to modify one of the rear heater pipes and the motor went strait in with an apaptor made from UNICAP.
The problem is that they are nowadays really hard to find, was looking the other week and couldn't get a halfcut under 3K.
But if you get your hands on a cheap one its a great conversion.

Cos in a bug it will only be good for straight line.

You would be amazed how much a top heavy twincam engine throws off the center of gravity in a bug, no biggy in a kombi though.

And in a full body bug the decklid sits so far from the body to clear the rocker cover children can play footy in the gap.

I wouldn't put one in a beetle either Joel. However its suprisingly good in an empty kombi panelvan. lol.

After its shakedown to warwick this year i'm going turbo for a bit extra torque.

These motors are cheap as chips and super tough!!

Yep, they're perfect for a Kombi.

4A are bulletproof little engines.
My exs 92 Corrolla was still running perfectly at 332,000kms despite going over 70,000kms without an oil or filter change

I got a lot of time for Toyota motors, I beat the crap out of my Celica and various Hiaces for years, just can't kill them.

mmmm... i like all this celica pride

:tu:

(waiting for the fire to roar from the h8trs)....

gen 2 or gen 3 3sge motors are going cheap and 2ltr and physically are only slightly larger than 4age. But JDM wise you instantly get 157hp (stock gen 2) up to 180hp (for stock gen 3). go for the gen 4 for $2000 and get yourself 200hp 3sge BEAMS motor (2ltr N/A). I broke my gen 1 3sge, it was very tired. Yet despite breaking my 3rd cylinder piston in 2 pieces, it still managed to drive me home . Now am the proud driver of a gen 2 3sge conversion and its a bloody good donk! If you want low torque, go the 3sfe and 5sfe. So the 5sfe only has a max of 135hp, they are REDICULOUSLY far more fuel efficient and have plenty of low torque. top end is very ordinary, but i envy my bro's fuel gauge in his 3sfe everytime were cruising.

Some info here...

http://www.celica-gts.com/forums/index.php?topic=15181.15

any 3s 8 bolt flywheel will fit 3sge or 3sgte from gen 2 upwards. Well, dats whats the forums are saying, but its been confirmed on a few sources (not just hte link above). It makes sense because 3s denotes the bottom end and and gte's and ge's are suppose to get pretty consistant (with only minor differences) to each other.

The only variation I am personally aware of is the very early gen 1's had 6 bolt flywheel. Otherwise all else fine :).

Thanks Chris, awesome info. You obviously have had a great deal of experience with these engines.

I wonder if Sherman or Kennedy sell a 3s adapter, or if my 4ag may work. I don't thing 4ag to 3s is even remotely close??

Kennedy do:

http://kennedyenginc.com/ENGINEOPTIONLIST.aspx

listed under Toyota S series.
Couldn't help ya with the 4ag info, thats one donk i haven't touched yet. The kennedy web site listed a differnet part number for the clutch/adapter kit for the A series oposed to S series.

I got a 4AGZE supercharged motor in the kitcar I just got, mated up to a vw gearbox. Hasn't been touched for 10 years, so not sure how good the motor will be. however still turns over by hand easy enough.
When I get the buggy back on the road, I will see if it runs, then sell engine/adaptor on here/ebay as I bought a subaru front cut to transplant into it. If anyone is interested let me know, and i'll keep you informed.
