Interstate Registration query
I've got the chance of picking up a Vic Registered, 73 Fasty for $500.....however I live in NSW.
Does anyone know what the process is for moving the registration of this vehicle across state boundaries, or do I have to take it off the road, and
put it back across the pits to have it registered in NSW?
And no....I don't have any relations in Vic to help out

Hi squizy.....I asked the same question in April.....this is the reply I got from the RTA....Sorry it is so long.....hope it helps!!! :bounce
To register the vehicle in NSW -
To register any motor vehicle that is not exempt from registration, the
customer must provide the following documents:
GREEN SLIP
INSPECTION REPORT
PROOF OF IDENTITY
PROOF OF ACQUISITION
VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION INSPECTION - If required
CONCESSION CARD - If required
See below for more information
a current CTP green slip from their insurer (except for trailers) Phone 1800
021 031 for a list of insurance companies and their prices. You must ask for
one with no number plate. You must present a stamped paid green slip when
you come to the registry to establish the registration.
an inspection report - an Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Report (blue slip)
from an AUVIS station indicating that the vehicle is roadworthy. In areas
where the AUVIS scheme is not operating, the customer must provide either a
blue slip or pink slip indicating that the vehicle is roadworthy, or an
inspection report from an RTA Inspector Vehicle Regulation (Written-off
Vehicle Check). You can either email us the area you would like to have the
inspection done at or phone the customer service centre on 132213. The
inspection report will cost $42.00 plus any repairs.
if the vehicle is new, a New Vehicle Inspection Report
Proof of Identity (POI). If you don't hold a NSW drivers licence then your
interstate drivers licence and proof of your NSW address, such as a lease
agreement or bank statement.
Proof of Acquisition (POA). If you have recently purchased the vehicle and
it is not registered in your name. To register a vehicle the customer must
provide documents that identify the person from whom they acquired the
vehicle. This is called Proof of Acquisition (POA).
To show POA, the applicant must provide one of the following documents:
the current Certificate of Registration signed by the last registered owner
or owners (if the vehicle was registered in joint names)
an interim receipt for registration signed by the last registered owner or
owners (if the vehicle was registered in both names)
a bill of sale from an auction house or motor dealer
a copy of the motor dealer warranty form, issued by the Department of
Consumer Affairs
a letter, receipt, or notice of disposal from the person or organisation
that last registered the vehicle, clearly identifying themselves, the
vehicle, and the buyer. The letter must include the registration number, VIN
or chassis number, and engine number of the vehicle.
To register a second-hand vehicle, the customer must also provide:
a Certificate of Registration showing the previous registered owner. If they
can't provide this, the RTA's registration records must be checked for the
previous registered owner/s.
for some vehicles, customers must provide evidence that they are using it
for a purpose that entitles them to an exemption or concession, this is if
your on a pension or veteran.
If the vehicle falls into one of the below categories and is in an area
covered by VIIU, the vehicle will require a RTA Identity check as well as a
blue slip.
* Written off vehicles
* Interstate vehicles where;
* the applicant is not the registered operator
* the vehicle does not have current plates and
registration certificate, or
* the interstate registration has been
established in the previous three months
* Low volume import, general or personally imported
vehicle or those imported for dismantling,
* Vehicles that do not have the original identifiers,
* Vehicles with no previous registration history and
no documentation to support the origin of the vehicle.
An interstate vehicle:
Can be legally operated by a visitor or tourist for up to 3 months before it
must be registered in NSW;
Can be legally operated for up to 3 months before it must be registered in
NSW in cases where a person is moving to NSW; or
Must be registered in NSW as soon as possible in cases where a person, who
is already a resident in NSW, acquires a vehicle that is registered in
another jurisdiction.
The fees for registration in NSW are dependent on the vehicles tare weight.
Below is a table of registration fees (for private use). From 1 January 2003
Fee $45
Weight Tax $43
Total $88
Last updated on 31/12/2003.
Stamp duty is payable at 3% of the market value up to $45,000 then 5% there
after (if the vehicle was not previously registered in your name)
There also may be a number plate fee starting from $31.00 for the general
issue black on yellow plates.
Unregistered vehicles may only be driven on public roads in these cases:
· if the vehicle has a traders' plate attached and the driver is the
issued trader, the trader's authorised employee or the trader's agent duly
authorised in writing
· if the driver has a UVP for the vehicle
· if they are exempt under the Motor Traffic Regulations and are being
driven for the purpose of effecting registration or renewal of registration
by the most practicable route:
- to the nearest convenient registry;
- to the nearest convenient vehicle inspection station;
- in the course of inspection or testing of the motor vehicle in
regard to the above;
- to the nearest practicable weighbridge;
- from a registry or inspection station to the nearest convenient
place at which necessary repairs may be effected, unless the vehicle cannot
be driven (i.e. unroadworthy);
- to the nearest convenient place at which to obtain compulsory third
party bodily insurance;
- to the nearest convenient location for any other purpose directly
associated with the registration process; and
- while the vehicle is being driven by an authorised examiner.
In these cases, where the vehicle is being legally driven, any person
negligently injured is covered by the Nominal Defendant Scheme overseen by
the Motor Accidents Authority.
If the vehicle is not being driven for the above purposes, an Unregistered
Vehicle permit will be required. The permit is only valid for isolated
journeys.

Phew....
Thanks for this Yogi. So basically.....as long as I have all the relevant registration information from the previous owner, and proof of his past
ownership, I just rock on up to the RTA and transfer the rego. But by reading this I will need a blue slip too ie, full road worthy inspection?
Hmm...not sure the car is quite up to that
:o
