fuel economy of 2lt air cooled kombi

Just got a very good nick transporter to compliment thevery original one owner 1500 beetle (which is just mickey mouse!) and wondered does anyone have any tech tips re improvement in fuel economy. Is there anything that can be fiddled with in the injection system? I have fitted a fuel star catalyst on the beetle which has been brilliant in regard to fuel consumption , cleanliness of oil and unleaded compatability, but i gather these units can cause problems with injectors due to minute deposites of tin. I,m a kombi owner from way back so I understand all the driving stuff. Cheers to you all . Jim

I'm assuming its a '76 FI model? If so, use premium unleaded to help keep the injectors clean (don't use LRP under ANY circumstances) which will help fuel economy a bit. The only other thing I can suggest is that you drive slower. My 2L FI bus could use up to 20 litres / 100 km if I really hammered it, but staying under 100kmh and judicious use of the right foot will bring the consumption down considerably. :)

Would not worry about premium ulp unless it pings with standard ignition settings. Both my 76 Kombi's wer perfectly happy with regular ULP.

Were your '76's fuel-injected? The biggest problem I had with the FI was keeping the injectors clean which was resolved either by using Mobil injector cleaner on every third tank, or by using Premium Unleaded.
