Wheel combos- thoughts ???
I am in a good and bad position. Firstly I am happy that you guys (such as fullnoise, bigrudi etc) are down south as you would be doing two laps to my
one if you were up here, though that said I would probably lift my game a bit if you ventured north.
Now I know things cant last so I am endeavouring to give the old 64 a makeover. I picked up a 68 pan with all the good bits such as front and rear
swaybars, extended towers, everything new and powdercoated, cross drilled discs all the good bits as it was being built for racing.. so am going to do
a pan swap in the next week or so..
BUT unfortunately I cannot keep my wide 5 American Eagles- which really suit the car. I know I can narrow the beam, but that would undo a great lot of
work that had gone into the car.
So I am heading down the path of purchasing some wheels. Given that it is a 64 that primairily plays in the Historic ranks I would like to keep it
looking period.
Anyone have any ideas as to possible wheels and tyres I should be aiming for and sizings- I initially was thinking 14's for lower ratios as the car
does more street sprints than anything.
Any advice appreciated.

The pan I bought actually came with a set of those very rims, but god they look ugly compared to the eagles- though that said they are just plain
white- where could I find a photo of your car with them on ?

I love the look of your car. It's hot! It's such a 60's look which is perfect.
I've got the same trouble you do. I can't run my 195/50R16 tyres on my nice polished Fuchs because they're too wide (203mm) and don't heat up as
well and I can't get as much steering lock.
I've currently got 195/55R15s on cookie cutters which are only 193mm wide. That's great for performance but the cookies look fugly!
You could get repro 15 inch fuchs or some old 14 inch fuchs and give them the same treatment as above. There may be a problem with the old fuchs. I
don't think the rims have a channel for the tyre bead to sit in so the tyre can slip of the rim if deflated. That could make them unsafe and even
illegal.
Perhaps some 914 wheels with the same black and polished treatment as your wide fives?
I wouldn't narrow the front beam. You need all the track you can get. My drop spindles give me a bit of extra track and with 3 degrees neg camber
it's a tight fit under the wheel arch and inside the clearenced front suspension.
My thoughts are get some 195/55R15 R-spec tyres and fit them to the 4 spoke 914 rims with the black and polished treatment.

hey peter..
Are u the guy running in our area in the herbie?? I heard there was one nearby (and have seen it) but had no luck working out who is was...
Im the freak in a green one with flowers on its arse and nose....
as for wheels...no idea...but what u had looks nice, so understand y ur gunna have trouble replacing them.

Hope you got a good buy........
Is the stud pattern a general 4 PCD?
You could look at other aftermarket rims?

Thanks for that fullnoise(sorry dont know names) Your car certainly looks the goods. What are your thoughts on 14s.
Yep Matt- I initially went off the idea but diagnosing that the gearbox in Herbie was cactus put it over the edge just before the auction ended and
now that I have it in the garage I am more than happy. He certainly did good work. It will be a HUGE improvement over the old suspension.
The car generally runs around the Durack/Oxley area or stored in Milton. I havent had it to any shows or anything as they always seem to clash with
racing events.. but one day I will get along.
I have heaps of people chasing after the wheels, but the way I seem to be going through cars I am not discounting having another wide 5 at some stage
so I will try and hold onto them.
