COUNTRY BUGGY REGISTER
This register was commenced in 1996 with a total of 7 Country Buggies in an effort to determine how many of these vehicles were still around. There
were only 887 produced at Clayton for sale in Australia and a further 1069 exported, the total production run of 1956 vehicles must be one of the
smallest VW factory productions ever made. I have a schedule of month by month units coming off the production line and a break up of models including
CKD, 1200cc units and left hand drive units.
The other primary reasons for starting the register was to ensure that this historical information was available for everyone in the future. The older
guys who worked at the Clayton factory are now falling of the perch at regular intervals and then the history is gone forever.
As a logical expansion of the Register I am now trying to capture chassis and engine numbers and matching them to the KO number.
The KO number is the actual production number from the production line. There was never any effort to match KO numbers, chassis numbers ( all started
from 118315000) with engine numbers ( all started from F1253000).
As an examples
KO 0001 has chassis number 118315000 and engine number F1253002
KO 0056 has chassis number 118315132 and engine number F1253427.
If you have a Country Buggy on the register ( or not yet) can you please provide the chassis and engine number so I can add them for record purposes.
I am now trying to obtain any copies of original Country Buggy technical drawings and full details of the export models, without much luck so far.
Interesting to note that only Country Buggies produced for sale in Australia appear to have been given a production number as 99% of the Country
Buggies exported to Malaysia and the Philippines do not have any KO number affixed.
More Country Buggy information is never enough.
Any information is appreciated.

Craig,
Thanks for the # details.
You are right about the earlier Chassis Numbers.
KO0001 has Chassis #118315001 and then it looks as though they used up this sequence. eg KO00238 has Chassis # 118315245. Then they moved to the
118310xxx sequence as KO#0272 has Chassis #118310273.. Matching KO to chassis numbers was not real important from what I can see. KO702 has Chassis #
118310006(this is the earliest Chassis # in the 118310xxx sequence I have details on.)
I would love to have the full KO, Chassis and Engine # details one day.
Bill.

Probably a question for Bill - Year of manufacture.
From the KO or chassis number, can you tell what year the country buggy was built?
Do you hold any details of this.
Also, on your register you have KO 197 listed as being in Rockhampton. Do you have any contact details of this person. I live in Rockhampton as well
so would like to catch up with this person.
Regards
Paul

Steffan,
Glad you were able to locate the KO number. Its another one to be added to the Country Buggy Register which is now pushing up to 290 vehicles.

Bill,
Of those 290 CB's on the Register, how many of those are roadworthy and are legally "plated" and registered for road use with a government
jurisdiction responsible for motor vehicles regardless of wherever they are located.....Oz, Philippines, US, etc.?
While you may not have a precise count, based on your position as The Registrar, you have more knowledge of most of these CB's than what appears in
the online listing, so you must have a pretty good sense of how many are really still being used on some basis, even if infrequently used.

Steve

Steve,
Best count I have is only 35 vehicles are currently registered and used as daily driver or frequently.
There are a few which are registered here on Vintage Plates which has use restrictions ( usually cannot be driven daily but can be driven to car shows
or for mechanical work, refuelling etc. I would say no more than 10 of this type. Thats a total of only 45 vehicles that are "on the road". I can
give you a lot more vehicles which are rusted out and "waiting for a resto"
Bill.
