Powder Coating standard rims
I got a set of standard 4 stud rims that need some work. I was thinking of getting them sand blasted, and powder coated in silver. Anyone done this
before?
Looking for any words of wisdom, and if anyone knows of a place in the Bankstown area, or leichhardt area.

shouldn't be a problem with doing them... if you do the sandblasting yourself just make sure you get them completely clean.
the powdercoater i have used several times (sorry he's in vic) just asks that i give the stuff to him asap after sandblasting so that it doesn't
start to rust....
oh.. and DONT touch it with your hands after sandblasting. rust will start to occur VERY rapidly if you do.
should be pretty cheap too...
see.... air and water do mix

I done a search in yellow pages, and I think I found the one near the airport. But I also found 3 other places near me also!
I will try to find a place that does sandblasting as well to minimise handling. I never realised that touching bare steel would cause it to rust
faster.
Now I am starting to wonder about the repairs I done on my car a while back ...

i never gave it much thought until i did some powdercoating a while back... when they told me not to handle it i was a bit doubtful it could make that
much difference...
so did a test on some of the stuff i had...
sandblasted two items... one i left untouched by hands and the other i picked up with bare hands.
within about 30 minutes the one i touched you could see my fingerprints beginning to appear as rust spots... the other piece had no marks or rust
spots on it...
even without touching the pieces you should get some sort of coating on them as soon as you can.
see.... air and water do mix

Most paint specifications will state that painting must take place within 4 hours of blasting. You should definitley not touch blasted steel as the
acids in the fingerprints will speed corrosion, not to mention the oil will have to be removed before painting. I imagine the same thing applies to
powder coating.

usually powdercoaters will sandblast and etch prime for you prior to powdercoating.

I called one place and they are offering undercoating at an extra $15 per wheel. They said it would help to reduce rust. Should I dish out the extra
money?

Rob.. There is a place in Gow St Padstow.. Seriously don't go anywhere else.. They have done a lot for me and their work and prices are 1st class..
You will get a bead or sandblast, etch prime, and a decent powder coat for about 30-40 buck per wheel.. If you're talking steel wheels probably
less..
