Rear engine mounts for late type 3


My left rear engine mount off my wagen is almost kaput. My motor sits down about 40mm on that side. There is a few cracks in and around the webbing for the mount and the piece in the front of the mount has broken away.
Has anybody done a repair on this before? Could I cut a piece from another car and weld it in or just weld up and strengthen what I have? It is a '73 manual.

Under the floor re weld the mounting points. don't just tack weld but seam weld the whole thing. As for the floor we reinforced it both top and bottom with 3/8 plate. Had to cut part of the floor away for 48 ida's to stick through so we seam welded some 1 inch box around the cut away area to strengthen the floor back up. Replaced the threaded rods that hold the mount under the floor with 1/2 inch booker rod and used nylock nuts to tighten it up.

Might be a bit of over kill for a stocko but the same principles apply. We are looking at 300odd hp atw so it needed to be strong!!!!

yes plenty of Type 3s have been welded/fixed at the mounts over the years; just make sure you jack the engine up to make everything line up again, then weld

I have done a similar repair as per above using the threaded rod and some metal plates it pulls the engine mount areas back into place so they can be welded

Its easy to do with the engine out of the car as well

Thanks guys, I was beginning to think that I had a one off.
I'll drop the motor so I can get to all points to weld. Quite a few cracks. It has worn holes into the floor above the mount so I will have to reinforce that. From what I read I think I can run rod from this reinforced top piece through to the base of the mount to act as new mounting bolts? From the looks of it I can only weld from inside the engine bay. Unless I get carried away and remove the airbox.
Again, thanks for the replies. Also looks like a mig might be on the cards.
