Well if it's a guessing game, (never played with anything but beetles & Kombi's) must be reasonably old to get that rust, and out of an aussie model. Passat/Fox? so early '80's?
Getting warmer?

No its not rust, its made from Fibre, and its from a Beetle and or Kombi, as there the only VW models they made at the time.

it is a cam gear out of a early (54 down?) 36 or 25 hp motor... as said above, past it's used by date.

does the words say "ferrozell" which is german for ferrous cell, which somehow is telling us it has iron in it?

looks like a cam gear....

Yes it does say that your right, but as you say, theres no bloody Iron in it thats for sure.

the hub is Alloy and the out gear is Fibre

Yes its a early cam gear.

Dave,
My Dad bought a new beetle in 1956, it went back to the dealer under waranty to have the fibre gear replaced by an alloy one. It was a very common problem.

Yeah i know WHAT must have VW been thinking at that time.

Ive seen them on Old Fords from pre 30s or so, but you ask for a new gear and you get an alloy one, or at least i did for my 28 A Model.
