What does 'TS' Stand for?
Hi there,
My notchy has a 'TS' Badge on the side and I was wondering if anyone here might know what that actually means?

Hmm thanks guys but I still couldn't quite figure it.
I checked the website out but they only had TL or TE in there. (interesting link though)
Also in the samba they had
"TS Abbreviation for TheSamba.com Also an S-Model Type 3 available
in the Canadian market place from 1964-65, as indicated by a TS emblem mounted on the back."
My notch back was build in '70 and is a 1600 so it also wouldn't fit their S-model either...

Touring Sedan - Touring Luxus - TLE
The TS badge was only used on VW assembled type 3 cars instead of the marker lamps situated where the badge goes.
the type 3 Fastback with Fuel Injection was called 1600 TL
or TLE
TS was an Australian thing..
Have you seen the red and clear marker lamps on some type 3s where your TS badges go
these were parking lamps - only one side at a time lit up..
which was law in some European countries..
I had a 1971 Variant back in the 70s which had the side markers..
The German early type 3 notchback [halfback] had a model called the "S" which had a high compression engine
and twin carburetors
the interior wasn't vinyl but cloth and was really great looking.
When that type 3 was made in Australia there was the "S" badge over the number plate lamp
but these were just 1500 engines with twin carburetors and were called "Twin S" locally

The "TS" badging is specific to Australian and Canadian Type 3's, the website mentioned above is good for Euro/ US cars but is inaccurate for
Australian built cars.
In Canada it was used on the 1964/1965 up-spec Notchbacks with a 1500S engine. The emblem is a circle with the capital letters T and S inside, and was
mounted on the engine lid.
In Australia the side TS badging refers to 1966- 1968 Fastbacks only. The rear script reads " 1600 TS" and there are oval plates with the TS letters
embosed which mount where the Euro cars had the side markers as mentioned above. In Europe the Fastback from 1966 was badged a "1600 TL" with the
later fuel injected version =" 1600-TLE".
The first Australian brochures in 1966 list the new model as the " VW 1600 TS Fastback sedan". There are at least 2 opinions of what the TS stands
for, including "Touring Sedan" or " Touring Schraegheck " ( german for slant back ).
Petey, if you have a 1970 Notchback, it would not have originally had the TS badges.

Tub o' s _ _ _??, Only the aussie fasty's had these and were pinned over the side marker holes. They typically appeared on the 66 fastbacks. The
imports had side markers, factory 12V, 4 stud wheels, disc brakes, a correct LH mirror, back seat armrest, german steering column, better
interiors, etc, etc. Fender may has been changed on your car...
