water in petrol tank - problems FOUND

As my car has been under reno for 6 months, tank seems to have gathered some water/condensation and the engine has been started a number of times. Can water hurt injectors. Have drained tank fully and new fuel. Plugs are very fouled up but will clean them. Should I run an injector cleaner or not?

Suggestions please.

Run the car on E10 ethanol blend for a part tank of fuel. The alcohol absorbs the water and allows it to be burnt.

Before ethanol blend fuels people used to add alcohols like Metho to their fuel tanks to absorb any water.

mate the Subaru dealer injector cleaner is great stuff, it is recommended every 10,000 kays or something and I have mates that buy it for Holdens etc

There may be a little water remaining in the tank as the line-out is a few mm higher than the base of the tank

you shouldnt realy run injector cleaner in a old car , because it is a cleaner and it cleans inside tank and fuel lines and then the 10 years of crap all ends up at the injectors. best to keep tank full to dilute any water left ,which wont be much if you have draind the tank.

Water is denser than fuel so it sinks to the bottom of the tank. Having the tank full or empty makes no difference.

Taking off the fuel hose and emptying the tank does not completely empty it. The metal outlet hose goes up inside the tank (normally with a poor quality guaze filter over it). Therefore there is always some liquid left in the bottom of the tank below the height of this metal pipe. This is where the water, rust and other crud will sit. To completely empty the tank you need to unscrew that outlet pipe or tip the tank upside down.

having a full tank does make a differenence in a car. not just a drum sitting on the ground. you add water to a bottle of fuel and shake it, it takes a while for it to settle , the way GtMAc drives the left over water will be gone in no time:crazy::lol::lol::lol:

Ian, whats wrong with my driving?

Have cleared the plugs, driven enough km's to clear the lines for the new fuel to come through but still farts and misses and sure can hear pinging.

It will not reach max boost and struggles to get to 5psi. May be my mind playing tricks but sure one of the injectors seems to be ticking much louder and the fuel line is really pulsing hard that side, but that may be normal, never fealt it before.

Have not tried injector cleaner yet as mixed reviews on wether to do or not. This tank was cleaned a few years ago when the Suby conversion was done, so apart from the water in the tank it should be pretty clean and has only ever run Shell 98 since then.

Just a thought: Try feeding your motor fuel from a clean jerry-can with a mix of petrol & injector cleaner. Its a bit of stuffin around but will stop any old crud in your tank entering your motor.

Yep hear what your saying but there shouldnt be any crud going through, 1. because tank was previously cleaned and 2. there is a fuel inj fuel filter prior to the pump and motor. Only thing that should have snuck through is the water.

Why is it never the obvious or maybe this is the obvious. Cant see how it happens. Pull the car apart running beautifully and then put it back together and runs like sh#t. Pulled plugs again today and one was brand newish, hadnt fired. Checked the coil pack and it had cracked at the base. Boof helped me out with a 2 bolt coil that I modified to fit and now running like old. So in need of single bolt coil packs if anyone has them lying around.

Electrical parts are things I like to buy new. You just have no warning when they'll die and how far through their life they are.

Yes I agree, but at $180 each I dont call that cheap. At the moment I only need 1 so trying to get by with that. Want to look into the Bosch units which are quite good and much cheaper or look at the later model unit which I believe is a 4 coil in one sitting on top of motor and does not get heat effected like the old ones.
