ea82t vw Please help


Hello

hey i was wondering if anyone has got photos or knows about the ea82 conversion.

i am just wondering if there is any problems with the motor fitting without cutting anything? (1967 bug)


any help would be great.

mount it on roof racks...

are u kidding.... how are u gonna mount a rad in a bug trunk and not cut away any of the body?
u cant do it and get air flow
most ppl cut the wheel well out
heres how my rota bug was done
just a box section frame with the rad mounted to and a fan on the front

theres a guy in town here with a couple of subi powered
bugs one has bad over heating probs when u put ur foot down but the others an ex show car and is really well done
he took it to klubfest on sunday so i got some pics while i was there

a few ppl over the years have cut out the rear parcel tray and mounted one there then made covers up

bajawes on here has gone that route with his bug

a bloke at work said that back in the day people used to put 2 rads beside the rotary (one on each side of the motor)

i actually sold that bug a few weeks ago cos after 7 years i was never gonna finish it but i was changing it over to a WRX engine
it had an RX4 rad and just uninsulated metal lines running side by side along the passenger sill so all the heat from the return line heated up the supply

it had an EFI 13B but im not really a fan of rotaries and there not the best engine to have in a vw
ppl will bitch and moan about this comment but i know from actual ownership that without a flatfour boxer motor the cars center of gravity is compromised
probbaly not enough to bother most ppl but im very fussy about the way my cars handle and i like good cornering characteristics
if u cant beat them on the straights then u get them thro the windys :cool:

That ex show car was my friend's Simon...He did do a fabulous job. How's it looking nowa days?

He now has a show winning Turbo Datsun 240Z. It really is beautiful and goes quite well too!

far from a show car these days
poor things a bit rough round the edges now... quite literally, bog is falling off the back gaurds everywhere
hes just swapped the wide wheels with merc hubcaps that it ran for ever with black empi 8s which looks a bit better

why would you want to do an EA82 Conversion ? the EJ series is much better.

I suggest you do a search on here as there is a lot of info and a few people with both eEA82/EA82T/EJ20/EJ20T/EJ22/EJ25/ER27/EG33 on here.

A couple of basic reasons I can think of:

MUCH lower total cost of MUCH simpler conversion (no computers, fuel system mods and minimal wiring changes etc.). Lighter. Easier to get engineer approval, RSC and rego. Normal mechanics not scared to work on them, and easier on the 'home' mechanic.

$5 to $10K EJ conversions aren't for everybody, though I'm sure we'd all prefer it (me included).

mm minteresting but not correct at all from what I have seen.

I will have an EJ22 powered bug on the road for well under $5k and can tell you for free that the EJ 22 is a much nicer engine that the EA82 will ever be.

If you look at the costs of teh conversion the adapter, clutch, radiator etc are the same costs either way.

Sumps suck on both stock so u will need to modify

So it comes down to an EA82 cost against EJ22 yeah. Sunspares sell a good E82 for about $550 or an EJ for about $1200 so talking what $700. Costs $440 for a loom and away you go, so around $1500 more to go EJ 22 over EA82.

As for mechanics not working on EJ's ?? there are enough of them and they can plug into their factory diag plugs.. I would say these days it is harder to find someone to work on an EA82.

Anyway just a few observations.

what brad said.

I'd only go EA if someone gave me the whole motor/loom and conversion plate/clutch for under $500. Which does happen from time to time. Otherwise, the EJ is a clear winner and so much better. There was a guy in the US putting an EA82T in a kit built plane. He swapped his intercooled turbo EA82 for a stock NA EJ22 and instantly had more power and a more usable motor. You could blow up an EJ22 every weekend for the next year and there'd still be another good one at a local wrecker's for under $1k (less loom) I'd reckon. You'd really be hard put to blow it up in the first place though.

I did an ea82 into a '74 LBug years ago. I had to cut out part of the firewall to clear the distributor. And panels on both side of the engine as the ea82 is quite wide. Sorry I don't have any pictures that I can find.
