Bare Metal Query


Hi Guys,

This might seem like a strange question. But do you prime on bear metal or should you use a phospheric type wash first (and how do you apply it so the primer then goes on smoothly).

Or does say an etch primer cover it?

A metal pre treatment, such as DeOxit, Deoxidine, Deran A etc, which are Phosphoric acid based are the first thing to do. Follow the directions on the container for how to use it. It is not required if the metal has been fully sand blasted within the last few hours.

Then I would etch prime, then epoxy coat. That is what I would do, and you need to speak to your paint supplier as to what they have available and what compatibility of products they have.

Application and how to apply smoothly is based on so many factors it is hard to explain. What CFM and tank size compressor, what air flow, what gun, what product, what manufacturers specifications, what temperature, how big a panel, whole car, experience of user etc. It sort of becomes a Star Wars thing where you need to "Use the Force"

Im in the middle of a project. (and before I paint Im trying to resolve why the paint has lifted on the bonnet and not the guards - both bare metal sprays - on the softop after 12 years.

The story is that my Oval body was bead blasted five years ago and was sprayed in etch primer, its been garaged since.. Having now got back into the restoration process I can see that surface rust is begining to form .. Would you suggest that I finely sand off the rust with some wet and dry then scrub it down with Deoxidine and then re etch prime it?? Would this be the most sensible method?
