Rebuilt Kombi 5 speed with Albins 1st and 2nd

Been offered a Kombi 5 speed with Albins 1st and 2nd ex-hillclimber recently rebuilt (told it has '8 bolt' cvs and flanges as well as stronger shafts - as a vw noob this means nothing to me!) from a non-veedubber to transplant into my type3 based kitcar. So, questions:

1: What's it worth - i.e what should I offer?

2: Does my type3 pan need much modding to fit it?

3: I can drive it before purchase so is there any bad noises etc I should look out for?

Thanks,

Mick.

1 - what do u want to pay.. 5 Speeds are an interesting box .. I would say $1500 - $2500 tops

2 - Yep you will need to give it some love as the 5 Speed is a side shift, not a lot but still not a bolt in.

3 - Make sure it changes up and down well and is smooth.

I have been told the 5 Speed is weaker than the 4 speed but not being a g'box guru can't say for sure. Ask 11CAB or Dangerous.

Thanks for the quick reply Brad. I figured on offering $1500 from what I'd read on here about them.

It's mated to a 2 litre turbo v6 and he wants to sell complete but I don't really want the motor.

Will check it out next week when off dayshift.

Thanks again!

http://offroadracing.com.au/index.php?option=com_marketplace&page=show_ad...

sounds like this one???

am pretty sure its not an 1800 or 2l 4 speed kombi box with a 5 speed conversion and that its out of a vanagon or something? not sure if its suitable at all. would best be to contact custom offroad or buggybrad.

is your t ype 3 pan swing axle? i cant remember, if so you would have to convert it to irs. etc etc

Ta for the help all.

IRS in mine Nick. This gearbox is currently in a type3 kitcar undergoing a midmount conversion. He doesn't know much about it (no ratio info etc.) except that it is ex-hillclimber and cost him $3500 to rebuild about 5000km ago, 'the mechanic' told him it was a 5 speed conversion of a kombi box, and that it should be good for around 400hp(!) - his statements, sounds wildly optimistic from the very little I know of VW gearboxes.

The shift arm has been 'modified' by 'the mechanic' - no idea how or why though, again according to him. Only talking aout possible max 250hp for the new motor (chev v6) - he has it mated to a 220hp turbo - so strong enough or not for the chev torque is the question.

Car was fitted with 265/50's on 15x10's.

Thanks all!

Mick.
