I was speaking to Mike Waldron at Vintage Vee Dub a few weeks back, they just completed a conversion using a type 3 auto, custom sub frame and
modification of the original floor pan.
If you dont mind modifiying the pan it is certainly possible. Im pretty sure the Auto box wont fit between the frame horns.

Yes, the type 3 fully Auto box is too wide for the beetle frame horns..
I have heard of two people doing the conversion
One said it was easy, the other said it was As hard as..
alternately, You can go to the semi automatic using parts from a beetle..
just find someone who has a rusty one for sale or has all the parts to swap over..
