non-VW 'Kombi' fuel economy
Thinking of a engine swap for my kombi. what fuel economy do you get with your non vw modified kombi???

my EJ22 kombi would use around 9/10 litres /100k but the big difference is you accelerate up hills and easily keep up with 110/120 kph traffic

wow 10l/100km is pretty good for a kombi. Other then the engine how much did it cost for the conversion if you
did the labour yourself

I got 10L/100k with our 1800 VW engine in perfect tune.
The EJ22 Subaru engine gives about 9.5L/100k. not much better economy. However you have double the power when needed for hills and keeping up with the
traffic flow. Service is easy as oil & filter every 10,000k . Then major service being plugs, leads, timing belt, etc. every 100,000k. No tuning
required.
I would think you would be $4-5000 cost for the conversion parts plus cost of engine if you did it yourself. Think flywheel, bellhousing adapter,
engine mount cradle, exhaust, radiator, thermo fan, throttle body inverter, wiring loom, VDO speed sensor, air cleaner, shortened sump, EFI fuel pump
& filter and a few other bits and pieces. Oh and you have to sort out a water heater system. Then you need to consider the engineers report to
legally allow the Subaru conversion and engine number on your rego and insurance.

I get about the same, maybe slightly better economy with the V6 than I did with my 1916cc VW engine. The problem is I accelerate harder now so cancel
out any benefit of the newer more fuel efficient engine

Why not convert to gas?
Had a full gas conversion done by Geoff Scott at Yerra (just outside of Maryborough) and at 66 c per litre and enough power to cruise the highway and
overtake on hills why consider going away from an air cooled engine in a kombi?
BTW there is no petrol at all used like some other gas conversions ...... just gas .......
Goes like the clappers it does!
Very, very happy with the conversion!

The problem is terms like "goes like the clappers" are relative.
To me, my Baja isn't what I would call "really fast". It's because I normally ride my bike, my bike does 0-100kph in 4 seconds, so the Baja is
relatively slow. It does 0-100kph closer to 6 seconds. That's quite a difference.
But relative to your air cooled kombi, I'm sure my Baja is really fast.
So unless you've spent $10,000 on your air cooled kombi engine, I don't think you could compare it's performance to the jap engined kombi's.
But I am glad to hear your happy with your gas conversion in your kombi
I don't think my Baja has any space left for a gas conversion.

This thread started about fuel economy of non VW engined kombis. I just got back from a 3000k round trip to Canberra(Rudd needed some advice ) and my EJ22 powered kombi did better than 11km/litre and got up to
150km/hr occasionally overtaking road trains...yeehaa
