what LSD's will fit into the VW transaxle? where do you find them from??

Quaife make an lsd for type 1 boxes, $1100 US. they have various websites

lock-right (i think) make a detroit locker style lsd for type 2 gearboxes.

They have a 2 spider version for $264 US and a 4 spider version for $293 US. Much cheaper but also a harsher LSD I would expect.

And VW had various factory LSD's. The 1800 type 2 tranny had a factory LSD available, I don't know how many or where though.

Secob, Wes has just listed every option that I'm aware of. I do know however that the factory LSD's are hard to find and expensive to buy.

I've also been on the hunt for a locker to suit offroading, but I'm not happy with the idea of an automatic locker on the road, and friction plate LSD's are a compromise off-road, so I was thinking more along the lines of an ARB air-locker.

Unfortunately, ARB don't make an air-locker for VW's (or didn't last time I asked), but maybe they make one that could be modified to fit? (I'll find out one day)

Choice of 'LSD' should be determined by your intended use for the vehicle (on-road or offroad), but I think in this case you buy what you can find/afford. :)

I've seen an LSD out of a IRS Commodore fitted into a Kombi auto Trans that was used in a Offroad Racing Buggy, So it depends how much money & time you are willing to spend. :thumb

Hi

I using a Quaiffe on the road and it works fine, but they are not really suitable for off road. The syncro had an airlocker and it would not be hard to fit one to an early Kombi trans. I dont think it would be to hard to adapt an ARB air locker into a Kombi diff. A friend of mine did a dummy fit up of 9 inch Ford diff to a Beetle trans but he couldn't fit the reverse idler in.
