Type 4 motor

will an 1800 motor fit as a replacement for the 2L motor in the kombi? Can I unbolt the clutch from the 2L and bolt it onto the 1800 and is the starter motor the same?

Yes.

The 2l clutch is bigger and I suspect the starter motor is different too.

The 2l flywheel & clutch are bigger, but you should be able to swap flywheels ( don't forget to recheck the crankshaft end float) and clutch, then reuse your original starter motor

Can I have your 2L? heh,

Just made me wonder can the flywheel from a 1.8L be fitted on the 2L motor without issue? Besides the possibility of premature clutch wear.

Is the 1.8 (and I guess 1.7) a compatible flywheel with the type2 transmissions? My mechanic did the auto to manual conversion which has a 1600 box mated to the 1.8 type4 motor. Just trying to figure out exactly what he did in there.

If at first you don't succeed. Build, build again.

1600, 1800 and 2L bell housings are different.

2L starter is different to the 1600 / 1800 which is the same.

1700 flywheel is a different size, and uses a 7mm threaded bolt to bolt up the pressure plate which is impossible to get if you dont have the original ones.

1700 is 210mm
1800 215mm
2L is 228mm

The bellhousings can be switched onto different trans cases, and the imput shaft needs to be changed too.

The flywheels all bolt up the same.
