Extractors & exhaust

G'day all,

Its coming up the Christmas time and was thinking of getting Dad a set of extractors new or used im unsure of yet. Biggest problem I have is what type of extractors to get Dad.
Now "our" (its Dad's but hey i get to drive so i have some bearing in ownership) beetle is a 1975 L twin port 1600.
From what the old man was saying about his beetles back in the day, i believe they were 4 into 1(could be wrong) and then a single pipe(I definately know it came into 1) coming out through one of the exhaust gaps in the back panel, he said it was almost motorbike sound like. So really main question is does anyone know what setup to use to get that type of noise, and really if anyone has that type of thing and wanting to get rid of it.

Cheers

Dave.

ooo there are various type of exhaust you can put on once you have the extractor in
if you just want one for everyday driving and don't want to spend much you can get secondhand extractor with the cross pipe exhaust. i got a set for $30 it sounds puffy and yea like a motorbike.. kinda

here's a repainted one

if u don't like the sound of that. it's really easy with vw take the extractor to exhaust place ask and get a new resonator and a muffler for them to put on probably charge u about 250 depend...

or if u could weld and cut just take it to exhaust place get a flange and bended pipe and weld everything on urself

I've got a resonator and a muffler that's my quiet one
i've got just a canon which is really loud
and just a resonator one which is only loud when accelerating

If you can get your hands on an extractor you could do anything amongst these anythings are;

the square pipe is a long story...

resonator+ muffler = quiet

http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/31/l_f2af177566aa4b6bb6c38995a5281ed6.jpg
loud when you accelerate but sound nice when holding the rev

but when you put an extractor on your inlet manifold preheat will never work the same because you are feeding the heat from both side so therefore there aren't really any flow in the system so you won't get much heat in your inlet manifold but that doesn't really matter if you're putting the extractor on for quiet ride

I love mu collection of exhaust systems.. i change them around on regular basis because i am weird and as always i go back to the quiet one

i don't know if my posts are helpful but there are EMPI phat boy ones which are like glass pack 3" systems that people put on a performance engine. mine is not a performance engine i just wanted it to sound like one occasionally

there were not many extractors that came out the cutouts on the beetle...
all the ones i've seen came out the side...

Sonic extractors were the thing back in the 60s and 70s...

everyone had them...

well i could be wrong about coming out of the cutouts...
Sonic extractors ring a bell so its more than likely what the old man had. Do they still make them?

beware u get what u pay for with those GT systems
the full stainless ones arent to bad but it depends what ur after

ground clearance is probably the biggest factor to take into consideration

ive had 8 or so different systems on mine over the years
very few last speed bump torture

Ground clearance is the biggest problem with most of the extractor systems. The best set I ever had was the Jack Brabham Lukey system with a tuck away muffler unfortunately they are not around any more,I've got a set of S&S headers with dual mufflers on my Ghia but the ground clearance at the rear was too low,we made a new pipe from the collector to each side muffler and this fixed the problem. Most of the reputable suppliers who advertise in the VWMA have systems at various prices. At the end of the day it comes down to how much you are willing to pay and just what you want.I do have a new set of extractors with a quiet muffler but they are quite low,Off the top of my head I can't remember what they are worth but if you are interested let me know. Cheers Les

the best muffler i've had on my is none...
just leave it to end at exhaust flange haha
that was a fun day.. it sounds really nice around 3000+ rpm and not really that loud in the car.

lol don't do it unless you are your own neighbor
