Auto - 3rd gear?
All you auto kombi drivers -
How long does it take for 3rd gear to kick in?
Daisy sat for a few year before she came to life again.
I put some nulon in her on the week end and that made it more responsive but she still takes a full 10-15 mins of driving to get 3rd gear.
Until then it sits in 1st and 2nd
Seeing as the wife does a lot of 5km trips Daisy is not getting to see 3rd much and this obviously is affecting economy
Do i need a thinner oil?
AN overhaul?

Barry
U need a box O/Haul. Theres crud and dirt stuck in the oil gallies of the box, and nuthing u doing with additives will fix
it.
Had same problem in a type 3 auto gearbox, which is same as Kombi.

YEP its a box and engine out job. Maybe not engine out in a Kombi.
the diff is seperate from the auto trans, so at least that wont have to come apart.
While i was there i would get the torque converter looked at as well.
They cut them in half n clean all the crud out of them.
The particular crud thats stopping the third gear change will be in the oil pump extension housing galliers that supply oil to the clutch packs.
make sure they stuff a piece of coat hanger wire up there to clean the oil passages out.
I didnt do this a few years ago and it resulted in me stripping and rebuilding the box 6 BLOODY times, untill the problem, was found, this
included fitting it to the car with engine and test driving it.
YES thats a double BUGGAR and a OH golly gost you hear me saying.

Blue not sure about VW autos but many autos use vaccuum to trigger change up. If the vacuum lines are split or disconnected it will cause late change,
especially into top gear. I'd check the vac line to the auto box(if VW's have one) before any thing else.

Grey
apparently that is how the 1800's are controlled.
I definitely know mine is a mechanical adjuctment.
Once it has warmed up it is fine. Floor it and it moves great.
It is when she is cold it just takes a while to kick into 3rd.

I'm afraid Nulon may well have made your problem worse if you used the gearbox additive. You can try having a good run to get the box hot,
dropping the oil, refilling it and taking it for another good, strong run to see if you can clear out the gunge. Then again, you may be able to take
the plate off and clean it out a bit, as the gunge will have settled as low as it could - the Nulon may even have done you a favour (it tends to
coagulate muck in the oil.)
