Excellent Weekend
Wow what a week. Let me start by saying well done, again, to Craig for all his hard work organizing the event. Unfortunately he's often too busy to
enjoy it like the rest of us. Jamie Hage from http://www.kustomkombi.com also
deserves credit for assisting Craig all weekend which meant he also missed a lot of the action. Well done gents.
The people who attend these events are brilliant. They're so friendly and everyone is willing to help. It was great to see a stronger Victorian
contingent this year. The 3 Volkomenn Art cars are very impressive. Dean's Porsche powered razor is sweet and I love the ratty oval drag car. The
pretty light blue oval which turned up last year for the show and shine was back this year as a drag car with a 2.3+ motor with a stinger and Porsche
fan. One to watch in the future.
By the end of Friday the drive from Sydney to Portland was worth it. We had a great day with the Portland Dune Buggy Club. Thanks for the invite
Jamie. I've removed the guards from my oval and am currently cutting off the roof with a grinder so I can join you.
Here are a few pictures of my adveture.
Bushfire damage on the Hume Hwy

Dune buggy ride on 'the wall'

Saturday display in Portland

My 44idf webers played up all weekend. They were fine on the strip with the main circuit and full throttle, but at anything below 3800rpm the engine
ran on 3 cylinders and popped and farted along.
I blew out the idle jets a few times. Rod suggested giving the engine a rev before putting the idles back in which also helped. Unfortunately the car
would then only run for 5 minutes before the problem returned. I pullted the top off the carbs to have a look. They seemed clean except for some
patches of white chalky stuff. Henry thinks this is orosion from water getting into the carbs.
It dogged me on the way home from Portland on Sunday night. I found a technique of accelerating to about 5000rpm in top and suddenly backing off to
3500 rpm. The vacuum generated by the engine with the throttle butterflies closed seemed to pull the crap through and the car would go properly for
about 5 minutes. Then I'd have to do it again. But, doing this used more fuel and I ran out 2 km before where I was going to stop in Geelong. When I
ran out of fuel I heard a big backfire through the carb. I have no fuel gauge and carry 5 litres of fuel. No worries. Until I saw the oil coming out
from under the engine.

Closer inspection revealed a mangled pushrod tube leaking oil.

Luckily Jak Rizzo gave me a 2 piece pushrod tube to fix such a problem. I've been carrying it around in my spares for 6 or 7 years and never needed
it. It took me over an hour to get the engine tin removed and replace the pushrod, rocker tube, find the lash cap and put it all back together in the
dark by the side of the road.

Finally I made it to my cousin's place, as planned, in Melbourne, but he car was still running poorly.
I spent Monday completely cleaning and rebuilding the carbs. I inspected the damage and reinstalled the 2 piece pushrod tube with some gasket sealant
to reduce the amount of oil it was leaking.

Fortunately I got home without a hiccup. The 2 piece tube doesn't leak much when the engine is hot. I had one more blocked idle jet to clear on the
freeway. Fortunately it wasn't a return of the chalky stuff which i feared. The car ran beautifully up the hume. Thankfully!
What an adventure. CYA CT

CT you will have to invest in some in line filters
there easy to fit on the gravity side of the fuel

Filters
Hi Dave,
If water is the problem I don't know if it came in through the air filters or though the petrol. The car sometimes sits on the street in the rain,
but I put plastic bags over the carbs. The problem occured when I'd already used half a tank of fuel.
I have a fuel filter under the tank. It looked clean. The filters in the webers were clean too.
My dellorto-style air filter setup is not ideal. I don't like the fact that the air filter bases are built like cups. Surely if any water gets on the
air filter it runs down and funnels into the carb. I'm wondering if I can modify them so the filter element is located by a ridge on the inside edge
of the filter allowing me to grind off the outside lip and even angle it down so water runs off the filter base?
I could even extend the air cleaner tops a little and angle them down like an umbrella. I've seen that on some trikes.
For starters, I probably need some more short manifolds that don't put the carbs so close to the sides of the engine bay.
To stop this hijacking I'll shut up now. I may continue this in the tech section. CYA CT

Just arrived back in Brissie. I'll post more info later in the week. Thanks to all who rocked up. Once again, great fun and great racing.
Did a 'Kramer - how far will this car go with the fuel reserve light on?' thing on Monday. Jamie my passenger not too impressed. When we finally
reached the next servo, I put 79.79 litres into the 80 litre T5 tank!! Less than a coke can of petrol. And this is towing the race car. Well, it was a
boring stretch of road, so this made it slightly more interesting....

Crikey Craig, you waited untill the trip home ! We checked the fuel range on the first refill in Goondiwindi, About 120 k's to go I knew it would be
tight on fuel so backed off a little. Lucky. We cruised into the servo and filled up with 59.4 litres into a 60 litre tank... not quite as close as
yours but we went one step further on the way home, knowing we now had a reserve of about 10 litres in a jerry can from the racing, we ran out the
tank and proved it's capacity is 60 when we still had about 12 km to go to the next servo.
While on the subject of fuel it was very interesting as we put $800 worth through the car (I think the injectors spent about 60 of the 62 hours full
noise ) the difference between brands. We consistantly got better
mileage from BP 98. Caltex about 25-30 km/tank less and Mobil 95 and 98 about 35+ km/tank less than the BP.
Pats, you have to be a facebook member to view your pics...why dont you post em here?
Thanks all for your kind words......C'mon Craig, post some results.
The Hillbilly racer's official best of 14 runs over the weekend, including Friday night were..
R/T 0.506
60 ft 1.778
MPH 84.27
E/T 8.249
all in all ok for a registered street car with 9.7:1 CR drove in the street parade and raced on Friday with muffler on.
Think we were the quickest NA street car ????

Cheers Pats, cool pics
Westi the 60 ft isn't real flash, but to run the car low, there are definately changes to make. Worst of all the suspension settled in the rear
enroute to Portland and we had the springplate adjustment wound all the way up, but still too low for good launch. Ended up putting in kombi bumpstops
and the car litterally sat on these for suspension. This certainly helped. As for the exhaust, we have had no news this end...BIG BUMMER, please try
and find it as I need more POWER.

I am finally back on the road home.
Staying in West Wyalong tonight.
Had four great days on the south coast around Johanna Beach bushwalking.
Awesome scenery.

This morning I dropped into Albins Off Road gear,
and got given the royal tour by machine-shop manager Steve Nicholsen(sp?).
Awesome facility..drooled over all the machines and stock on the shelf,
including their AGB tranny...the biggest version has six speeds sequential and 11.5" crownwheel!!
I have yet to be able to work out how to reply to emails,(with mobile phone plugged into lap top)
so those who have sent messages, all is well, I will reply when I get home.(Dad).
B4, sorry I missed your calls, running too low on credit to ring back.
Another 13 or 14 hours on the road tomorrow.
Looking forward to getting back home.

Dave,
nice to see you got to enjoy some of Vic's beautiful sanctuaries, seeing as we have lost a lot of it in the fires all around the state. I even think
some of the Otway national park was on fire?

Home safe and sound now.
Great scenery down there.
There was no fires near me, but I heard on the radio that
there was something a-brewing in the Otways on Friday when I left.
I did 70km walking on the coastline fom Shelly Beach and as far west as Moonlight Head.
I took those pics (above) on the drive over from Portland last Monday.
Stopped at Parkes yesterday early:

I like this shot better:

Travelled nearly 4900km in ten days.
Glad to be home, now to unpack!

Glad you made it home safe and sound.
It's been quiet here, I think the Portland racing has worn out all the Southerners, may need to give em another week or two to get over it.

The other result that comes to mind was the kit car class.
Barry Lord's Ascort won over Rene' Felkl's RSK.
Not sure of times or how many others were in the class.

I just used the 1/8th to 1/4 mile calculator on the Wallance Racing site.
Pretty happy with the result (assuming its accurate)
-> Your ET computed from your vehicle ET of 9.35 seconds is 14.61 seconds in Quarter Mile.
Last time I did 1/4mile best I got was 15.2 in full street trim. Loosing about 100kg in wieght had some benefits
Dangerous, good to see you home all safe mate.

That HP calulator is is pretty spot on.
Did mine and it came out at 110 at the wheels and 122 at the flywheel.
Porsche quote the 2.4 T spec MFI 6 at 130HP at the flywheel and my car was dyno'ed at 110HP at the wheels a couple of years ago.
Enter your 1/8th Mile ET/Speed and Weight of your car
ET: 9.35
MPH:
WEIGHT: 1980lbs
Your HP computed from your vehicle ET is 122.60 flywheel HP and 110.34 rear wheel HP.
Your HP computed from your vehicle MPH is 0.00 flywheel HP and 0 rear wheel HP.
