Zero cost low tech tyre bead breaker

The local servo couldn't handle a puncture on this (non-VW) wire wheel and I had to do it myself. Necessity is the mother of invention. Take some left over steel and a car port post.....

I used a nylock nut to stop the push down bar turning too freely

heheh my desperation method was to place the wheel under the tow bar of the heaviest car I had, and use the scissor jack under the tow bar onto the sidewall to break the bead.

it worked.....eventually.

If it aint broke,

It can also be done by parking are car on the tyre (but not the wheel) to squash it and pull the bead off the wheel. :thumb

I tried driving over the tyre. It works fine for old cross plys or light truck tyres. Unfortunately this was a very supple radial & needed pushing just below the rim.

A few good blows with a 4lb hammer will also break the bead...
