4 stud vs 5 stud swingarm compatability
Hoping someone has done this before.
My 4 stud '69 swingarm type 1 is jumping out of top gear so it's time for a "new" gearbox.
Does anyone know whether I can just use the whole drivetrain out of a 1966 5 stud type 1 and just bolt my 4 stud brakes back on to it or are there
subtle differences between them?
Both trannys are tunnel type and look identical from the outside.

the 66 box has short axles.... and the 1500 has long axles.
the difference is where they bolt to the trailing arm and the backing plate.
You can swap the axles over no problems
use new gaskets and axle rubber boots.
If you want to run a 12V starter then you will have to replace the starter bush with a adaptor type that has the OD of a 6V and the ID of a 12V.
Make sure you fit new mounts while yr there and axle seals as well.
OH undo or crack the rear axle hub nuts before you remove the box from the car as there torqued to around 217Ft Lb and you wont be able to hold them
unless there fitted to the car and the weights on them

Thanks vw54,
Sounds like the easiest plan would be to remove both drivetrains, swap their axles and tubes (and new boots, seals etc) then put the '66 bits
with the '69 axles and brakes back in the '69 or am I reading you wrong?

No your reading right, Yes undo both rear axle nuts first and remove both gearboxes, pull axles off and swap.
Probally about a days work with motor in and out etc, if you know what yr doing.
Make sure that the axle tubes moove freely when re installed. This is done by adding the paper shims / gaskets under the side plate cover.

Yes Brads right from memory at 100 kls it will be doing about 500 more revs.
Presuming you have a 1500 Single port in yr 69 car then the above figures are what happens in my car as ui have this set up, but will be changing back
to a 1500 gearbox with a Superbug diff.

Thanks guys,
I sort of figured the revs might go up a bit but an extra 500 rpm sounds a bit too much to put up with.
I've since aquired a later model transaxle from a mate so I'll go with that one and keep the '66 setup for an emergency spare.
Thansk for all the info,
PP.
