Where to get a paint job??

Hey there,

We are getting our 1960 bug back on the road after 31/2 years in storage and are keen to give it a paint job.

Would anyone know a good place in brisbane to get it done??

And any idea on cost???

Cheers
Neil

Hi Neil, welcome.

This is a big plan you may consider here. You have to get a plan together.

What condition is the car?
Has it ever been painted before?
Do you want a colour change?
Do you have a budget?
Do you want to strip it to bare metal?
Do you want a concourse or show finish?
Do you want to replace all rubbers?
Do you want it to last 1, 3, 5, 20 years?
Do you have a time frame?
Does the car have any old damage? Are you sure?
Rust bogged up, Replaced with quick fix methods or proper restoration?
New interior while you are at it?

Cost can range from $1000 for a quick blow over to $20K for a concourse restoration.

Car is original condition, only upgrade that has been done is from 6v to 12v.
Only paint was some graffiti we put onto a while ago.
We will be sticking with the original blue colour
No budget yet, just trying to get an idea of costs and what i can do myself.
Don't think i will need to strip it to bare metal, but may be benificial to do so. (need advice)
don't really need a show finish (not sure what consourse finish means)
I do want to replace all rubbers
I want it to last 20 years
No time frame, we have had it for around 5 years, it was off the road for 31/2 and are in no hurry to get it on the road, just want it done properly
Surprisingly no bog in the body, and very minimal surface rust.
I will be needing new interior, hood lining, carpet, seats re appholstered, carpet etc.

I am wanting to strip the car of all body parts myself so that it can go to a spraypainter and be prepared and sprayed, then i can put it all back together.

deciding on bare metal or not will depend on whether or not you wish to go 2k paint or acrylic if 2k is the answer bare metal is the way to go as the original acrylic softens and moves when heated (by the sun weather) and hardens when cooled down where 2k is uneffected by temperature when cured causing your new 2k paint job to sink back leaving rings or worse still possibly crack.
not a must to bare metal for acrylic respray but to make sure all traces of rust are are removed and to make sure all previous body work is fresh and done right bare metal is recommended. at the end of the day your budget will be the deciding factor. with the right shop you will get what you pay for and if the price sounds to good to be true it probably is.

20 year guarantee means definitely a bare metal job. The actual removal and refitting of parts yourself will save money, but the true finished product is reflected in the skill and time put in by a skilled painter. Concourse means trophy winning.

Definitely allow $5K for the paintwork, and if you can find a place to trust that wont just quote $5K and then short cut everything along the way, you will have a very very nice car.
