Oils ain't oils...

I read where the EP gearbox oil only corroded etc the brass & copper if the gearbox was sitting for a long period of time. So it wouldn't really matter whether You used a GL4 or GL5 oil.
75w to 90 weight oil should be OK. I have never experienced difficult shifting in the cold weather in manual VW gearboxes but a few years ago I had to change the manual gearbox oil in My Mitsubishi to Auto Transmission fluid as it was nearly impossible to change gears in the cold.
This option was advised by Mitsubishi, so it seems that just about anything will work in a gearbox.... Lee

Hehehehe
I run a mix of half 80-90 gear oil and half auto trans fluid in my F-Vee.
No dramas in both the split trans and barrel trans.
Shift feels peculiar for a while but once used to it it works fine.
There you go.

Ok, I have a bottle of Valvoline sae90 gear oil. Do you think it will be ok to put in my '70 beetle?
The bottle says api gl-5 and gl-6, nothing about hypoid...
Should I go back to kmart and exchange it for another type?

I'd take it back. Theres 1L bottles of GL4 Castrol i think lat time i looked on the shelves at KFart. Otherwise, i'll sell you the stuff i bought at Auotobarn coz i dont need it anymore.. it penrite GL4 stuff and it states it wont corrode bronze and brass... No profit for me, just saves me taking it back to the shop! :D

Castrol VMX transmission oils ARE GL4
they are available in different viscosities.
SAE 75W-90 85W-95 etc...
Oils ain't oils.... Lee

I did read that the alloy-copper-brass eating oils only are a problem when the gearbox is standing for a long time... No problems when in normal use.... Lee
