-- Baja and Buggy Lighting --

Alright tech fanatics:

What's the best options for replacing the lighting on the Dog-O-War. It goes into the Mechanic Wednesday and Auto Electrician Thursday for a revamp and quotes on future work.

The headlights are an issue - currently they fill up with water and sand with no rear rubber seal. I want to go to sealed beams but there is no protection from a flying rock off the wheel. Water spray may also blow the hot bulb from behind also.

What do you suggest / use?

do you have the steel bits behind the headlights? They should stop the sand and water from getting in the headlights.

I give mine a hard time and haven't managed to get sand or water in them, definitely no sand anyway.

you must be missing the steel bits. Cut them out of beetle guards and put them in the fiberglass guards.

Nope - No steel bits. Totally air cooled.

So is that a big job?
How do you affix it / them to the inner guard - Glue, rivets, clamps?

bolts.

they bolt through the same flat section as what your headlight must already be bolted to.

and it's not like I haven't tried to get water in mine

Sealed beams are good, but not really necessary. You should be able to get some better quality inserts with H4's, or just uprate the stock globes to Quartz-Halogens with a bit more wattage. I'm not sure on the laws in NSW, but 100W high beams are usually the legal limit. I used to run a pair of 130's though.

Whatever you do, make sure that the globes are matching. :)

Update:

Well last Wednesday and Thursday I put the Dog-O-War into the mechanics (Wed) and the Autoelectricians (Thu) for quotes on what needs to be done before the rego check.

Apart from the machanic coming up with a lengthy list of little things the lights will be the biggest problem. Hella have protected units that semi and seald beams can go into - for them to go straight in would be too easy though. They have to be either braced to the existing rims by weld of the hole refilled with glass and recut as they are smaller in diameter than the current lights, being 7". H4 can go in and although the dearer option sound light a good light. They can take a hole and keep going, wont fill with water and sand of course and more durable.

Other probs that need to beaddressed is some pan rund under the pedal assembly from a leaking master cylinder when I bought it; steering box has a lot of slop - great in the sand but not safe on the road; a leaking oil cooler and need to more the ignition so the horn can go back in. Other than that things a just sweet.

Tomorrow we a trying a coat of the new paint color to see if it look ok in actual daylight.
