My 68 Fastback project
Hey everyone. I have finally got to start my fastback which has been sitting there waiting patiently. It is pretty much straight and solid with
minimal rust. Unfortunately has been tempered with alot in the past. The wiring is up the shit and has had the front seat rails modified to fit
aftermarket bucket seats. It has a ea81 suby engine conversion done to it, but dont mind that as I wanted to do a suby conversion on a type 3 anyway.
Below are some photo's from when I first got it and the progress over the last week.

Started by getting all the crap out of out to put new interior in. Dash was totalled so removed it and started on removing the front seat brackets and
welding in the original type 3 rail. Then put in the new sets and carpet. The inside of the windows were so dirty, it took a rag soaked in metho so
get them clean.

This morning got into the outer wiring, hooking up rear lights, headlights and blinkers. all pretty straight forward. Wish I could say the same about
the brakes. Man, it took me hours of stuffing around. Both side hand brake cable had snapped. I have a spare but couldn't get the bake drums off to
get the cable out. The axel nuts are seized on there, will have to get someone with a air rattle gun maybe. The brake peddle had no pressure what so
ever. I started bleeding them, then all this rusty water looking fluid came out. so fully drained it all and bleed with new brake fluid. The front
disks were caked with rust and pads fully worn. Cleaned up the disked and replaced the pads. Couldnt check the rear shoes though.

Wow, worked on it today from 7am till 5pm. Big day. I went to fill and bleed the cooling system and found coolant dripping from the radiator. It had a
small crack in the bottom. Fixed it with a repair kit temporarily, but will probably replace it with a newer one. All the fuel and vacuum hoses are
all over the shot. It is so complicated compared to the 1600 VW engine. The carbi was removed and is in complete. Will have to source another one. But
still has oil in it and turn over freely.
I replaced the back 2 guards as they we both damaged. Not sure where im going to go with the body. I really like the old rat look but think I give her
a a coat of the blue that is on it now to make it more uniform but keep it flat looking. Will probably lower the front 1 spine to match the back. I
think the original steelies look cool but would like to find a pair a wider steels for the back.

Yeah who needs brakes anyway. I remember driving my 69 kombi around without brakes for a couple of weeks, you kind of just get used to it. Even when
it had brakes they weren't much good at stopping, good old drums all round.
