best place for a stereo?
am just about to install a stereo in my oval, a sub boxe will go behind the back seat... but not sure where to put the head unit and front speakers as
i don't want it to be seen or make it too obvious,if anyona has pics of their setup that will give me some ideas....
cheers |

The most obvious place for the head unit is in the glove box. As for the front speakers, do your really need them? There really isn't anywhere
you can put them to hide them and yet maintain a good front 'stage'. A nice set of speakers in the kick panel below the rear seat base would
probably be just as good acoustically, and very unobstrusive. Maybe a set of piezo tweeters up front to give the illusion of a front stage?

wot kombi sed
definately recommend the tweeters in the door panels up front, panasonic used to make them with a set of different bases to allow different mounting
positions.

You could mount the speakers under the front seats on the floor?. There is loads of room and the seats are so easily removed on ovals.
You'll just have to build a simple box out of MDF.

I have seen dome front speakers mounted on the kick panels infront of the doors up high. There is a indent on the body here and with a small mdf
spacer u can fit a set of 6 inch speakers in here, and as they are high up on the kick panle are hard to be seen.
When mounting in the glove box, do u have to cut out the back of it to fit the head unit. I have been investaging this in my L bug and may have to cut
the box for the unit to fit? |

i've had a llok closely in the car and looks like the sub boxe will go in the back of the rear seat with 2 x 6" on the top of the box and 2
x 10" subs....under the rear seat 2 removable panels (to access batteries) with a set of 6" and a set tweed under the dash....head unit in
the glove box.....i still got a set of 6" i could put at the front but a bit sceptic to put them on the front panels....i'll see how it
sounds first ..... will keep you posted and post some pics up of finished installation.. |

i duno much about beetles, but does the dash go through to the front boot? if so you could cut a hole in the place whee a radio would usually sit and
use a VW blocking panel or metal in matching colour to your dash and hinge it at the bottom with the radio behind. that way u dont lose glovebox
usage, the cd playa is invisible, and u retain a stock dash look

Hi dudes,
The Glove box is a good place, and the original stereo hole is too small for 'modern' din stereos. I couldn't do the glovebox thing as
mine is falling apart, so I've got a bracket under the glovebox of my 68 with the cd player in it. Its pretty hard to remove and not
that obvious(I should mention that like most affordable stereos, it has a detachable face which makes it stealthy at night). Front speakers
are definitely needed, you should be careful if you try this, but i fitted some flat mount 5 1/4 inchers(splits would work also) in the front doors
(just under the winder). With the limited space, this is the best position for sound in comparison to other options. But the winders should be toit at
all times to avoid scraping the speakers.
I have a 10" sub with a small amp (100 watt rms) in the back. Trust me, this is enough, my car is pretty doit, but sometimes it feels like the
windows are gonna give when I play 2 step or dnb stuff with the fat basses. I reckon theres too much bass and not enough mid in the back, you probably
need some 6 incher in the back side panels as well, but im probably fussy.
Sorry about the caffeinated babble, hope it helps.:jesus
cheers

my stereos stuck in the back, got an ol' toolbox, painted it up and have the thing bolted down in the back. speakers and cd player fits nicely
and you get surprisingly good sound... but the changing of cds??? Its a pretty basic system so a thief won't nick it- though they have found it
fun to play around with my distributer cables in the ol' engine..
Its good coz its easy to install and take out if need be. just learn to do things by feel....:P

like someone mentioned earlier I have 2x 5inch splits (in the kick under the backseat, just had to move the battery a little) and the tweeters make a
huge difference, the only problem with putting the deck in the glovebox is that they are only made of masonite (usually 30+ year old masonite) and
are easy to break from the front boot/bonnet sooo unless you live in the country where theft is a novelty i would advise you mount your deck
elsewhere. Having said that if you install a decent (not a stock) bonnet lock that should not be a prob.. In regard to the sub box in the rear
parcelshelf that is good in theory but when the hot sun beams in through the back oval it tends to crack the vinyl gland of the speaker (unless its a
bullet then its alloy) be careful too that you dont cook it (its next to the engine (durrr)) but besides that I think that it would be awesome.. i am
building a mdf suspended hood liner to house deck and 2 splits because there is ample headroom and it will be out of sight unless you know what to
look for through the window...
errrr yep thats all

it also muchly depends on what amp ur gonna use!!! ur better off in my opion running 1 x12" on a decnt output amp then that of 2 subs!! the best
thing is most modern headunits have a great output for things such as splits and 6 x 9 's!!!
cheers

sounds like quite a system. wouldn't mind that setup at all. i haven't changed the sounds in my vw's, but i've done my sisters
seat.
alpine 500W amp, 6x9"'s front and back, and then the 13" sub in behind the center seat. gives a great sound. (just have to watch the
lights dim when stationary and the bass is thumping :o
