How Much Is This Worth

Had a friend buy a 1979 Beetle Karmann Cabrio, genuine convertible with Fuel injected VW motor!

He bought it for $10k and its in very good condition,

Did he stumble on a goldmine or is this the going rate?

As I thought these were very rare especially being a 1979 convertible

Yes - $10k is cheap IF it is in great nick.
Really good ones with AC have been sold for more. Havent seen many for sale for less.

They are not "rare" - just not seen here?
They are common as dog poo in the States.
Does it have air cond? A lot of then did.

They aint rare, but they are the "last" Aircooled vert! Thats why they are so exp. That is quite cheap for a 79 vert!

Just my 2c. N!

Did he get it from Thornleigh, as they had a triple white about 4 months ago? I was considering getting it as a bookend.

If it is, $10k is a good price for it.

My '76 cab is the same, f/i motor, aircon, and yes, a very different engine note.

And Yes Barry....in time....17" rims....lowered.....exhaust. Ahhh $$$

Squiz.......

Top Buying especially if its been converted to RHD with engineers certificate and with rego and with a good roof and of course minimal rust. They made about 100,000 1303 cabrios nearly 20,000 1979 models. Still excellent buying.

I saw a factory convertable, I assume thats a Karman Cabrolet in a wrecking yard in sanfransisco, it had no motor but whoop de doo a motor would be easy to source, now given the californian laws that would make it a post 73 car as the only reason I could see for it being there was it cant past emmissions and smog tests, probably why the porsche 911s were there too.
I,ll draw you a map if you're keen,

I couldnt believe my eyes when we went wrecker hunting, there are some amazing things to be found there.
A karman Ghia for $150 was another bargain I saw, but had no money left to do anything about these cars and had to just walk away shaking my head, thats a year ago now but I am sure the deals are there constantly.
Cheers, Tony

Cabrio's

Costa,

Cabrio's are the business. With the roof up they are nearly as quiet as a hard top. Restoring one myself, I would advise that make sure the top and all the rubbers associated with the top are good. To restore a top properly it is $$$. 1303 refers to the front windscreen being curved and mcpherson strut suspension (a 1302 is what we call a superbug). Both came in 1300cc and 1600cc overseas (as this would be an import) but if its FI then its almost certainly a 1600cc.

You can still buy the FI setup and put it on a normal 1600cc as they still make FI for all the Mexico bugs. You'd be better spending your money on a proper FI setup that you could get locally though.

The muffler is probably different on this car as late model FI cars had a single exhaust pipe and possible a cat. The muffler makes a big difference to sound.

Cheers

Steve

Make it better

Stick porsche brakes and 18' cup wheels on it and a T4 in the back and it would really be the business.
