72 was the first year of high backs but came out in August 71. The car could be the 72 model year but build/purchase date would be 71.

Man, it never ceases to amaze me the knowledge that people on here have! Where do you find all these bits of info 1500S??, or is it just years of experience??

First 3 numbers of the VIN will tell you which model year - 361 for 71 and 362 for 1972 model spec.
Both have very basic interiors and very similar.
Depending on body colour your interior ( seats, door panels ) will be a single colour vinyl in either black, red, brown or off white with Black dash and carpets.
For 71 grey faced gauges, then for 72 change to black.
BTW High backs were standard from 1968 in Europe and USA, so they can still be called correct in a stock interior,
not sure if they were available as an M-code upgrade ??

Just silly enough to have been driving Type 3s since the "teens". By the way, that was in the 60s

With people rebuilding and swaping model parts from year to year the looks of a car can get rather scrambled. In many cases you can't even trust the compliance plate to have an honest build year!

If the car has high back seats, whether it's original or not leave them there unless you want it shown as original. I can remember the "cool look" of the rolled top seats of the 67??? Type 3s and couldn't wait to get one with them in. Big mistake!! Must have been the most uncomfortable seats I've sat in on a long trip. Then couldn't wait to get the high back 72 SB and after sitting in them for years it's no wonder that the 72 high backs are in my 1964 1500S!! Not only better seats for comfort but better safety wise as well.

Now why do I still like them after all these years!??:grind:
