New guy from Canada

Hello all

I originally found out about this site when Joel had posted a link to his "how to put an SC12 blower on a Bug" buildup thread, over on Super Beetles Only. That was back late last year when I bought a 73 1303 Sports Bug in Calgary Alberta Canada, and drove it the 3,000+ km back home to (just outside) Toronto Ontario Canada.

http://i419.photobucket.com/albums/pp278/fastEdVW/Fall%202008%20epic%20road%20trip/95290007.jpg

http://i419.photobucket.com/albums/pp278/fastEdVW/Fall%202008%20epic%20road%20trip/95290014.jpg

When I was a teen many years ago I had a 72 Super, and thought what I wanted for my re-entry to the world of VDubs was a curved windshield Super. But I ended up selling the 73 this spring, after I decided that I wanted an earlier car instead.

So one of the guys in the local VW group that I had joined told me about a nice 67 for sale about 10 minutes away. The car turned out to be a pretty nice example, and we made a deal. Not sure how your 67s were equipped, but in North America it was the first year for 12V, also the first for the 1500, but it still had the old style bumpers, rear lights, and 5-lug wheels, along with lots of hard to get one-year only bits. The car is basically stock other than a narrowed beam by Lanner Khan, VDub Engineering, and a CB Perf. wide-5 disc brake kit.

For now the engine is out over the winter to replace the leaky pushrod tubes and seals, and to clean and detail everything up nicely. I got a couple of dual carb kits off the Samba, one has the Kadrons on the old school steel single port manifolds, the other is a brand new EMPI kit with copies of the Weber 34 ICTs. Haven't decided which ones are going on yet, but I'm leaning toward the Kads for more of an old school look.

Eventually I would like to do something with the SC12 blower I snagged off U.S. eBay. I bought it back last spring when I still had the 73, with plans of doing a Megasquirt EFI at the same time. It could be something neat to go on the 1500 in the 67, maybe that's a project for the following year.

Mainly I signed up on here to be able to use the search feature and look at all of the photos, but I figured it would be rude if I didn't also make an introduction.

cheers
Ed N.

Thanks for the welcome everybody.

Colour is Java green, correct. Wasn't sure about it at first when I went to look at the car. I've had a bunch of green cars already, didn't know if I wanted another, but it has grown on me. Lots of positive comments about the colour at the shows.

Jason, sorry to disappoint. I had bought the 73 with the intention of doing a mild GL car. But after getting the car and searching around on the Web, I discovered that it was a Sports Bug, a fairly desirable special edition on the 73 1303 only. So I was loathe to modify a car of that nature, IMO it would be better left mostly original. With the car I had also got the factory 5.5" wide wheels that are unique to the car.

The person who bought the 73 is a real nutbar for the Sports Bugs, he also has the Saturn yellow version too. So it has gone to a good home. At some point I may look for a Super again to do a GL car, but for now I'm digging the old one.

cheers

I thought it was, probably my favourite colour on a '60s Bug.

So I picked up a set of Randar wheels for the car last weekend. A guy had them advertised on the Samba for a while, but didn't want to ship them. Turns out he was only about an hour from me. Poor sod had to sell his 55 Bus last year to make ends meet with the young family, and he had these wheels left over. I didn't take the tires, as they weren't a suitable size for me. I've ordered some 185/55R15 for the front and 205/65R15 for the rear. Also have a set of redline portawalls to go with these. I think it's going to look pretty slick when these go on in the spring. Yes, there is a 4th wheel, before some cheeky bugger makes a comment about that.

So I ended up ordering 165/60R15 and 205/65R15 Continentals, the 165s just came off backorder in this part of the world in time for the upcoming season.

Had a shop up the road that has nice equipment mount up one of the rears today, I was antsy to see how the redlines were going to look. Turned out at least as cool as I had hoped for:

Might do a dark grey metallic on the painted portions of the wheels rather than the black as well.
