Electronic Ingnition,views?

Hi Guys.
Just wondering how many of you guys have electronic dizzy's on your beetles. And if you think they are a good thing,is there any performances advantages and so on.Also do you recommend an electronic coil to match it.So like buy everything thing at once dizzy, coil, leads.
Any ideas and thoughts would be good.
cheers

I have a Scorcher distributor
http://www.performanceignition.com.au/scorcher-distributors

They use stock Bosch parts and are of high quality - as in the cap, rotor and electronic module.

If i was doing it again i would look at the coil pack system VVDS sell.
They dont have a distributor and are similar cost.

Havent really looked into them as to who they are made by and how easy it is to buy new coil pack (should the need arise)

Do i notice a BIG performance difference - no
Am i glad i have it - yes
Is it worth the cost - not really.

I just hate points with a passion. Bought brand new Bosh points with less spring tension than a soggy banana.
For some reason the Bosch points are rubbish.
I have heard a story the Torana XU1 dizzy points fit a 009 and have a high spring tension.

i've run a few, cheap ones leave u stranded

but pretty happy with my pertronix
as Barry said if your points and condenser are in good nick along with the rest of the ignition system obviously on a stock engine u wont notice any difference, maybe slightly easier starting

but the maintaince free aspect is worth it alone

Yeah the pertronix is what i was looking at getting, the flamethrower or something it is called.
So you think my stock coil could handle a Dizzy upgrade like such.?
cheers-Merry Xmas

Easier starting is the main advantage... first kick every time...

I have been using a home made kit - a High energy ignition that uses the normal coil [not GT40] and points...

the points never wear out, but the rubbing block does...
the points I was using, had a plastic rubbing block, and it wore down and shorted out.. killing My High Energy Ignition..
so, Now i'm back to a condensor again.. lol

I have bought a New SVDA Bosch dizzy and Pertronix ignition system from aircooled.net in the USA...
this dizzy gives better mileage and the engine will run cooler...

I haven't gotten around to putting it in as yet.. as I have a few other things to do to My beetle... lol

it is recommended that the Pertronics is used with a Coil over 2 ohms.. 3 ohms is better..

most performance coils are under 1 ohm... and will burn the inductor out.... instantly..

You can use a new set of wire ignition leads with VW resistor ends with the air seals.. these are very inexpensive.. [$40]
or You can spend $200 on a performance set of leads...

which will do the same thing... lol IMHO...

cheers

the straight drop in points replacement modules are fine with a stock coil, thats all i ever used
most hi output coils are a joke

ive had an Empi electronic igniton die within 4 months and a few GT40 coils die over the years and a few on friends cars do the same
but as much as i slag them off the GT40 coil and cheap electronic ignition i put on dads motor over 9 years ago is still going perfectly *touchwood*

it wasnt an empi module but it was a cheap one, like hotspark or somthing, rip off of the compufire kits

Until some preposterous rule change reversals, I ran a Pertronix11 (smart module) setup in my F-Vee (total loss) which is a straight drop in dizzie module and the appropriate Pertronix Flamethrower coil.
Its the only ignition setup which would run the fixed gap surface discharge plugs I was running then. they had a gap something like 100 odd thou and required a system with GRUNT to fire them reliably.
When the ancient points went back in, the engine refused to rev over 3500rpm until ordinary gapped plugs were fitted.

No more points to wear down, get grubby and need adjusting every 2nd race. No wandering dwell/timing. Set it once in the shed and thats the last I ever looked at it for best part of a couple of seasons. I got sick of hooking up a timing light to check it.......... Thats what I like!
Definitely easy starting and much better crap weather running but as far as performance increase, nothing I really noticed. the engine seemed somehow....happier.

I have been running a Crane Hi6 in my T34 KG for 5 years now. It still uses the standard points set at the moment with out any problems. Constant dwell, no burning points, all you need to worry about is checking the timing every 6 months or so. This would be taken away when I fit a pertronix hall cell.
The main thing I like about the Hi6 is the adjustable soft rev limiter. Lot softer on the engine than the old rev limiting rotor.

I think that the Compufire coil pack set up for VW motors is a nice set up too. DIS-IX Distributorless Ignition System => http://www.compufire.com/vw-products-main.html

I gave up on Bosch points years ago.
Have had great sucess with Beru points though they are hard to come by. Got over 60,000km in the kombi with one adjustment. No shift in dwell or timing.

Likewise on the Bosch points.Supercheap sells them so that says it all. I had been using Champion points from Repco and like Andy Beru when you could get them but they are pricey for points.
Changed to Pertronix drop in module. Both the 009 version and the SVDA version have worked flawlessly. Easy starts, better plug life. I run it with a plain old bosch black label coil.

From the Bill Fisher book I got off Joel it states that no horsepower can be gained with special ignition systems but it will provide maxium power in the most strenuous applications.
Thats worth the $130 I think.

I would expand on that and say how much TIME you want to spend on it.
I, for one have better things to do with my time than fartarse around with prehistoric points and setting them. In a race car this is every couple of races or so.
Those days of prehistoric points "technology" are long gone!:lol:

44 is close to stock total advance for type 4/kombi motors.
A type 3 I got had a type 4 dissy installed. Never had to re-built the motor so no idea if it did any damage, the motor is still going strong (I did fit an original dissy though)
