New 65
Hi all,
Picked up my beetle recently.
1965 1600 disc brake conversion, interior retrimmed, gauges, quarter windows removed etc etc.
All in all pretty clean, have found small amount of rust but easy repair.
Had to get a VW after going to the DOVW at Cranbourne. Could not believe the quality of the cars and what can be achieved.....Was driving my old mans
68 911s (red), you may have seen it there.
Great forum you have here and cant wait to get it on the road for Portland.
I have tried to attach photos but am having dramas....any tips?? I have uploaded to photobucket but still having issues.

Very nice. Interesting to see the late-model air cleaner on it. Do they flow alright? My 1600 motor is running an old oil-bath air cleaner at the
moment, hadn't really thought about those ones.

Yeah, will be alot lower soon....Im still unsure weather to shorten the beam or just lower.
Motor is sweet.....Looking for exhaust system and have a mate with a webber set up which will hit it soon.
I was looking for rims but have painted the originals black with the vw hubcaps and dress ring and they look sweet so will probably just use them at
the moment.
I will be pulling the front end out tomorrow to give a complete overhaul...The car has been sitting for a couple of years so will spin the discs up in
our lathe etc and replace anything that is needed.
As per the air cleaner i wouldnt know how it flows as ive only driven it about 5 mins then into the shed for stripping. I would think that it would
flow alright though.
Loving the scene and cannot wait to get it on the road.

New 65...Front end removed
Hi All,
I have completly removed the front end on my new project and giving it a freshen up.
One question is, do I lower/narrow the car now or do I wait for after the RWC.
Can anyone give me some rough restrictions ie minimum height and width etc without getting a major hassle with getting it registered.
I see some of the cars on here that are absolute beasts but I cant see how they could get thru a roadie.

For all vehicle modification legality questions, the best thing is to read the National Light Vehicle Code of Practice, located here: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/vsb_ncop.aspx
According to the guidelines, you can raise or lower your suspension by up to one third of the original travel without approval, but no part of the
tyre or suspension can contact the body during the full steering and suspension travel. Further to this, the minimum ground clearance of the vehicle
must be at least 100mm within one metre of an axle, and at least 1/30th of the wheelbase at the mid-point between the axles. Basically, as a general
rule, 100mm is as low as you can go, for the lowest point on the vehicle.

Hey Hamish,
I just finished pulling the front end out of my bug this morning. Although, unlike you I couldn't get the tie rod ends to let go from the steering
box. The Ball joint separator snapped after I got the link pins undone. Had to pull the beam out sideways.
The front beam looks great. What did you paint it in?

G'day
Just after some advice
I am about to pull the motor out of my bug to clean it up prior to RWC etc etc...
Its running quite well and strong but I have some parts that I could fit while it is out.
Ive got some hi lift rockers, straight cut cam gears etc etc.
I dont really want to pull it apart just to install the gears while it is running well......or should I split it and maybe add a few more fruits to it
while im in there??
Ive also got the option of getting a single weber with manifold etc but have been reading books and on the forum and it seems that there are a few
cons to this modification....Cant afford a twin carb set up at the moment.

Stock cam gears are fine, unless you've got something important to put inside the engine like a hot cam, stroker crank, new bearings and so on then
I'd leave well enough alone. As for the single weber it's up to you whether you should go for that or keep saving for the twins. It sounds like what
you really want is twins so perhaps keep saving. Having said that, a stock 1600 is a little bit small for twin 40s, but a single centre-mount weber
would be just about right. If you're going to increase the power level later then twins are the go in my opinion.
