Air filter mods?
Is it possible to modify the stock airfilter box to fit a K&N or similar filter? yet retain the stock look in the engine bay?

Yep - i had a K&N in my late filter box. The last sort that went on a 1600 twin port
It fits straight in
I will try and find out the model number that it came off

I prolly should have specified that I meant an earlier type oil bath filter .... I know it would require modifying the lid of the box. Just curious to
know if it has ever been done ... ?

I had a Unifilter sponge element panel in my first 76, with the rectangular filter box. No mods required, just buy the filter and drop her in.

Hi
You might be better off getting a plastic air cleaner from a L bug (I assume where talking bugs here), they have paper element that could be replaced
with a sponge element, apart from a bit of fettling with the oil breather it would bolt straight on.

I was hoping to retain the stock look from the outside (trying to make it look factory) but was just wonderingif it was possible to improve the filter

FYI I am running a K&N panel filter in a stock air box on my daily (Mirage) and am not really convinced it makes much of a difference. To get a
better effect from induction, I think you might need proper CAI, just changing filter elements won't have much effect in my opinion. But you could
try an experiment, do a couple of quick trials with and without any air filter and see if makes a difference.

I have done the experiment on my daily driver. (a 75 series landcruiser) and I think it does make a difference (tho fairly minor) However I'm not
really after amazing power, just clean air and easier to clean filter. I was just a thought, but seems like too much mucking around ...

Hey Chippy, there's at least one other person out here who understands your question and why you want to do it to an oil bath filter. I have
wondered about that one as well, buts its way down on my list of 'actually-gunna-doo-stuff' ...
Maybe the website should have a topic area devoted to nay-sayers, so the rest of us can just get on and develop our ideas without the energy suckers
dragging it back all the time.

Chippy,I am assuming you have a 1500 or 1600 upright engine,I have 1 only paper filter that replaces the oil bath insert at my workshop if that is

you do realise that the oil bath aircleaners were the most effective, it was only cost cutting that they went to the plastic with paper element type

I am not debating the efficiency of an oil bath cooler ... I just believe (mistaken or not) that the K&N type reusable filter is cleaner and
easier to maintain. I will have a fiddle with it and see whayt I can come up with. Hell I might just leave it well enuf alone! lol

Page 63 of the April 2010 Hot VWs magazine has a photo of an Empi accessory but it doesnt mention if they are still being made. Its a modified air
filter lid for a 1500 oil bath air cleaner, and a special air filter that fits inside the cleaner.
I'm not so sure about the chrome but the idea is exactly what this thread started off as.

Todd I don't have a pic of the element but it looks just like the top of the oil bath filter,simply take the top off,clean the oil out and fit the
new top. Sorry about no pic but I am indisposed at the moment.Les
