Exhaust Question.
Hi Guys,
First time poster on this forum and I must say that im very impressed with the information so far, not too much crap between threads which is a
pleasnt change.
I have many a question in relation to my bug and im sure you all will be far from impressed with my knowledge of beetles.
So first up, I need to install an exhaust which came with my bug.
My problem is fitting the exhaust to the car.
I ahve 2 pipes coming out where there should be one, if you understand what I mean.
Heres the picture, in the centre, there are 2 pipes where I need one to fit the new pipes.
Is there an adaption plate or a different manifold i need to make this fit?
I will also need to remove the heater i guess, which im not to fussed about because its a soft top and it will be driven with the roof off most of the
time.
Thanks for your help, and If no one on earth knows what Im talking about, ill post more photos on what I mean.

Yer, thats a two pipe heat riser manifold. You will need to get a single heat riser manifold if you want to run it with your exhaust to have
carburator warming. You will need the little pieces of tin wear around the pipe where it meets the exhaust too.
that or get a new exhaust with the two ports for that manifold.

Awesome stuff.
And where would I find myself one of these manifolds, and how much is it likely to set me back?

Your 2 pipe manifold is quite rare - last of the last beetles had them
the single pipe is common as muck - good ones are as common. They rust out on the pipes.
You can buy new or 2nd hand
You old one will be valuable to some one
Why "must" you remove the heaters
Dont just remove them
The heater boxes have inertia for heat on them. Cast iron??
Air must blow over them. Either into the car or to waste.
If you are going to disconnect the hoses you are better off getting rid of the heater boxes and putting J pipes on.
Otherwise heat radiates off the heater boxes and "can" lead to head heating issues

Thanks for the reply.
I dont really need the heater. It rattles alot and is quite ugly.
Ill keep it if helps stop over heating problems, as i understand how the heater works. Air passing over the exhaust into a pipe and into the car, so
that makes sense in the cooling aspect of the engine.
I want to try and make the car less complicated. The car is already a convertible, so it has lost that original feel already and I dont think ill be
putting the roof back on to get that back, lol.
Ill save that for the next one.
So its not too difficult to find that manifold. Ill keep an eye on the wreckers, ebay and the forums if they turn up.
Whats the difference between the 2 manifolds?
Can i bend one pipe into the other, weld it to one pipe and then set it up into the exhaust?
I supose if its easier to buy a new one why dont I just do that..
Correct me if im wrong, but the manifold works as such.
From the carbie to a t piece which then hits a rubber join and diverts into twin pipes (Twin ports) and then into the side of the cylinder head.
I need part from the carbie to the rubber joiners correct?
The 2 pipes that are rare then come off that piece.

one of the bugs i had years ago had a twin preheat like that but was fitted with a monza exhaust so only had one set hooked up
they all lined fine but whether anything had been cut and rotated i couldnt say cos it was too long ago
Re the heaters you can take the heater boxes off and just fit J-pipes, just be sure to plug the holes in the breastplate tinware and the fanshroud
