Little Red. The Build Up.
Hi Guys.
This is my new pride and joy.
Not everyones flavour i know. The missus wanted a convertible "I want somthing to drive in summer with the roof off". So, the excite both of our
tastebuds, I got this guy.
I do have to say, it has very little rust, the floors have been re-done, so no trouble there.
I got it from a guy who owned it for about 6 mths in Rosebud in Victoria.
I belive its history was used as a rental car for a bed and breakfast, somwhere on the peninsula. So the people staying at the B&B would be able
to use the car to go down to the beach and what not.
Its come with a EMPI Monza exhaust (Brand New), new door skins and some other bits a peices.
Its got a brand new roof.
1965.
1600 Twin port.
Fibreglass guards and a big ass whale tail (that will be used to dry my towel after I go for a swim).
SO heres where I started.
So thats when I got her.
Pretty strait.
Then I started the fun stuff.
So aftersanding and dismantling, I found some interesting things.
So this is where im at now, today i mean.
Got to cut the cancer out and re weld.
Ill post more photos of progress, belive me, this is a slow job, its only me and im pretty much learning as I go.
Its a massive job, I do understand that.
Will keep everyone posted.
Oh and if you want to come down and give me a hand your more than welcome, beer is cold and VEEDUBB needs sanding.
Thanks
Stuart

So I ordered my JPipes yesterday afternoon, came this morning.
So I figure, on an RDO, what better than to install my new exhaust.
So this is before Its gone into the car.
So first i had to pull this stinky old thing off.
And take the old heater boxes off.
And that was a son of a bitch too, only 2 bolts, but those top ones at the top of the headers killed me.
So its on, and sounds really good, the faint smell of burning paint stinks.
So now I have this issue.
Can anyone tell me how I can resolve this?
Am I going to have to buy another manifold, or will this one slid out a bit to match up with the new holes.
Muchothanks.
Now, to get that rust in the heater channel.
Fun fun, cut cut, weld weld, bash bash, bend bend, weld weld, grind grind.

OK - you have a VERY late manifold
They are not common (wont say RARE but....)
I would box it up with the exhaust
One day some one will give you a few $$$$ for it
You need to loof around for a "normal" twin port manifold
Did you look in the holes on the exhaust to see if they are drilled out??
If they werent i wouldnt bother doing anything - the exhaust gas isnt going to come out to do anything

Famous last words, but good luck there. Make sure you get the roof sorted and that it fits properly, or keep it for a sunny day cruiser, because
you'll find yourself sometime in the future re-doing the pans and the channels again because those roofs do leak. Looks like a fun project all the
same, and your missus will enjoy it once it's all done.

Bizzare,
The ports on the exhaust are already open, thats how it came.
Should I just buy a new (second hand) single heat riser manifold for it?
Whats involved in removing the old one, do I need any gastkets and what not?
I do have to remove the alternator, the coild etc, but I would love to try and remove as least as possible.
That is if I have to.
I could get rough and just plate them up, but it will look shit, pus it will proberlt make noises when the engine is running, as it will be banging up
against each other.
.
Hamish,m im keeping my wheels man, get your eyes off em, they're the 5 stud type and in pretty good nick, the side dressing however are the shit
plastic ones, so ill ditch them for some new ones.
Theyre off to be sandblasted this week and pained the same colour as the car.
Squizzy, I know about the floors ey, im not holing my breath lol.
It pretty much will be a summer cruiser anyway.
My dad has a moke and will not get in his landcruiser to go to work, even on the most freezing cold wonter days, he insists on wearing his jacket and
beanie, followed by a skull cap with goggles.
The roof has just been done, its brand new canvas, so its all good around the edges. I doubt anyone could get it perfect, im gathing its going to leak
like a seive.
What are the roadworthy requremants for having a drainage hole in the floor, so like a rubber gromet near the pillars??
Done supose you know do you??

No dramas Stuart...
I am sure there would be no dramas to have a drainage hole in the floor with a grommet as our clubman has the same.
As Bizarre said your manifold is uncommon. Just get another manifold to suit and keep the other one stored.

Changing the manifold is a bitch
Yes - the shroud/alternator needs to come off.
Easier that way
Change manifold gaskets and boots while you are at it
OR..........................
You can buy blanking plates
Might be a bit hard to lift the twin pipes out of the way
A PROPPER stock exhaust pushes the air from right to left
Look carefully at the stocker and you will see the connection pipes go to different places.
RHS - hear the head. High Pressure
LHS - near the collector (well sort of collector) Low Pressure
Mr VW was VERY smart.
The gasses FLOW and great heat exchange
The extractor you have they are both at the high point
Gasses at best pulse back and forth
Really MUCH easier to explain over a beer
Anyway - hope this helps

Bizzare, What would happen if I just cut them off??
Blanked up the inlets on the exhaust.
That would work.
On second thought I should just keep it, buy a new one and get it over and done with, im taking everything off anyway to cut them.
Do I have to purchase the inlet ports aswell? So from the boots onwards? Or do I just buy thatupside down T peice, manifold, if you follow me.
And im in Sydney in the next 2 weeks so Ill take you up on that beer, LOL.

So weve dont the welding in the heater channel, and me and my screw driver decided to go to the bottom of the pillars, and what did we find I hear you
ask?
OH SO MUCH,
so we poked and poked and poked some more.
Good times.
So now I have this hole.
So thats where were at.
Ive got to make up that panel.
Which is going to be a son of a bitch.
I do need to ask though, What do I do when I get to the seam, im going to have to weld there arent I?
Its only a few mil but i kinda dont want the bead showing on the outside.
Thoughts, If you dont know what I mean, ill be more clear, its the seam that flows from the bottom of the winscreen along the door hinges and to the
bottom of the car.
So thats where im at, ill hopfully finish that before the end of the week, work permitting.
OH, ive got a handy hint aswel.
My GF works for a roofing company, on my way home from work yesterday, i stopped by to visit, went for a walk around the store and found these,
They're steel, and perfect for welding small holes in your VW, so if you need any, go to a roofing store and get yourself some FREE steel paint
samples.
Oh and they will never rust because its colorbond.
OH and does anyone know what the hell this is before I remove it.
Thanks
Stuart

Man you think I know how to cut and weld?
Im flyin blind dude, i just do what I think is right. The great thing about metal is you can cut it and grind it out again and again and again.
Im just tapping the whole car with my screw driver, its a bit weird, if the neighbours looked over the fence and saw me, it would get a bit
strange.
Is my filter a good one?
Most likey repro original yeah?
I just ordered my new intake manifold aswel, so that exhaust will hook up nicely.

Oh an has anyone filled their exhaust half moons?
So the 2 standard half moons on the rear?
Im thinkning filling them (welding in new pieces) and smoothing it over.
Its doesnt seem too common, everyone just runs non standard exhaust and keeps the place where the standard one was.

lol oh ok well it looks like you are doing a good job so far.Yeah fuel pump not filter lol.Um well yeah, they are a sealed unit with no bolts holding
them together so less chance of leakage. So yeah they are pretty good.the original may have lost a pipe or started leaking or something.
Good Luck

So its been a busy day in the Garage.
This is what Ive welded in today.
and heres the finnished product.
So a good day all up.
I also re loacted the fuel filter and re did all the wiring in the engine bay.
It still needs to be neatened up ALOT, but its on the right track.
I also welded up the fan holes in the doghouse.
Ill get new tinware when I get some more cash, but thats a somthing that can wait.
I do need some help in getting the motor running well again.
Because I have fiddled with it, it now runs like a no legged man down a hill.
I do have all the original air box and all the vaccum hoses.
I do want to put a different filter intop of it, one without vaccum hoses.
What do I need to do with these open pipes?
Also with the oli filler.
Can I use one of those small filters on that?
How does everyone else run it?
Thanks
Stuart

mate the whole idea of moving the filter is to get it out of the engine bay entirely. as all it takes if for it to split and you have an engine fire,
i suggest under the car where it comes out of the transmission forks.
other than that its looking good as your slowly making progress.
