OBD1 software diagnosis assistance.
Hi Guys, I have installed an EJ22 into a T3 and after having fuel problems (sludgy fuel tank), the engine is running superbly.
It was said by a VW officianado that I will be disappointed with the conversion compared to the wasser boxer.
Well it doesn't sound like a VW engine nor pull like one, it is smooth, torquey and quiet and pushes the van along fast enough to warrant a careful
eye on the speedo.
The idle revs on an EJ22 cannot be adjusted manualy and as it is idling excessively, I need the assistance of someone with OBD1
software capabilities.
I do intend to get the necessary software etc. but really need a quick fix. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,Dave.

this is a pretty common problem in all ej series engines
idle speed is adjusted by loosening and rotating the Idle air control valve
99.9% of the time high or low idles are not a software issue
its the IACV is gummed upwith carbon
try cleaning it out first
and then set the idle with it
process is pretty simple

Thanks Joel,I removed the battery to start another vehicle and on re installing and starting the idle has dropped to an acceptable
level. I am thinking that with the fuel problems I was having, the ECU may have adjusted to suit and when I disconnected the battery the ECU may have
cleared. Appears all good now, but I will clean the valve.
Thanks for the link Joel.
Dave.

No it isn't. It's done by the ECU, basically treating the ICV as a stepper motor
Edit: Should have added, follow those cleaning instructions but add some "witness marks" onto the IACV body and the actual valve - then you'll be
able to align it back up as to factory settings

damn you got me there bloke
guess i shoulda added, you can tweak the speed if you have a IACV with slotted mounting holes, most do but some dont
ECU controls how much it opens but the valve itself is set at the factory,
usually they dont need moving, just cleaning

Hehe. But seriously, loads of people think you adjust the IACV to alter tickover.
Above all, don't adjust it by using the throttle stop on the Throttle Body

Hey guys, I removed and cleaned the IACV as per the link and the problem seems resolved. I still have a slight flat spot on start off but that could
be due to changed inlet dynamics.
Thanks again, Dave.
