What Makes A Beetle Tick

What makes a beetle engine tick constantly. It sounds like the fan belt but its not. I think i read somehwere that its the tappets but im not certain.

And why does my engine make a cool whine noise. I wanna know what it is to see if i can make it louder. It gets louder with revs but cant seem to hear where its comin from.

Its a 1600 with a solex 30 pict-2 with the stock air cleaner.

I think this is the tick season, isn't it?

Cheers, Greg

the whine is the fan in your housing.
as for the ticking more details.
is it only when the car is moving and if so does it change with speed?
or is it only when the car is stationary?

There sounds like something is caught in the fan. With the engine stationary, reach to the back of the fanhousing and check that nothing has been sucked into the fan.

a whine for no reason isnt good. may be worth taking the fan belt off (when cold) and running the motor for 2-3 minutes and see if the noise is still there. Dont run for too long without the fan.

yeah thats what i was thinking joel, just wasnt sure if thats what it was.

The whine isnt a bad whine, its like an induction whine if you get what i mean but yeah it doesnt matter i just want the ticking to go away so i can hear my exhaust and only my exhaust at idle.

Here is a quick vid and it should have the ticking but not the whine cause cant really hear it from beind the engine.

It may be a bad ring because it does tend to blow some smoke whenever its starting.

Here is the video
