Advice needed

G'day fellow dubbers.

I have pulled the engine (1600 tp) out of my Veedub and I will list what i have planned.....I dont want to split the cases at this stage so all of the mods are bolt on.

1. 1.4:1 rockers.
2. Exhaust system....probably Fat boy exhaust and extractor system but still undecided and thoughts welcome.
3. Blocking heat to carb from manifold...have been told this could extract up to 3 hp.
4. Power pulley....This I know has been debated before but the car is only a weekend driver....If anyone has a second hand one for sale let me know.
5. Im lightening the flywheel to approx 10 pounds. In all books etc I have read it states that around this weight I should go to 8 dowells.........I cant believe that if I lighten the flywheel I need a more positve connection... I would have thought that having a heavier lump spinning would produce more of an impact on the OG connection.

The majority of these ideas have come from the "How to hot rod VW engines" book.....and should increase the HP to somwhere around 80-90hp. This apparently is safe on standard internals but not exceeding 5500rpm...

All input welcome and let me know if anything is amiss before I start bolting these items on or getting anything onto the lathe.

Item 5 : 8 dowels
It is not weight but vibration or harmonics that causes problem

Thanks Warren.
But wouldnt something heavier spinnning increase vibration and harmonics?

Thanks again.

Some head work will be beneficial. Either sticking with stock heads, or switching to 041, 043, you can benefit from porting and polishing, and match porting the intake and exhaust. It's where the power's created after all.

split the case and start with a happy bottom end....THEN go about extracting more power

ok #3....
maybe at WOT if its 40c out but for everyday driving your bug will only end up being a pig to drive around town and use more fuel
you really think it would be there if it wasnt needed
fuel needs to stay as a vapour to burn properly, not condense back into a puddle on the bottom of the manifold cos its entering a long runner after a change of state from liquid to a vapour

and the power pulley
is shortening the life of your engine really worth 1hp which you wont even feel?
trust me i bought a bug with one fitted and on a stock to mild engine you cant even feel it make any difference
anyway think about it your doing other mods to increase the engines output, does it realy make sense to reduce its cooling effeciency
german engineers spent big $$ and hours of R&R to make the stock cooling system as effeicient as possible

theyre only usefull on high revving race motors where the fan is spinning faster than its designed for

Thanks for the advice Joel....like I said I need every bit of info I can get.

Im still stuggling to understand the lightend flywheel debate.....If its heavier, it must create more vibration and upset the harmonics. If i put a flywheel the size of al 20cent coin on I doubt I would need 8 dowells to secure it!!!!....Im about to spin the flywheel up in the lathe and take some meat off but am after some details on where it should be taken from but will post in the tech section.........

Hellbug...Im new to the game and really am after just a weekend driver with a little more from the stock engine....Ive got access to other cars if I want to go for a real fang (Members Rides...something else in the shed) but I would prefer to cruise around in the beetle. I dont want an all out racer but something that keeps me entertained and I really enjoy working on this thing...

Thanks again

Hamish
