Who has a blower or turbo flat four
I've given up on the 1914 and have decided to go the turbo or blower. I would rather try a blower due to the slightly less problems with heat.
However either will do in the end. Is anybody running either setup although I'm swinging to the hair drier type blower. I'm over the big
bore or stroker engine with twin carbs and want to do something different. I am involved in engineering in the aviation industry an would love nothing
more than to design and build something and give it a go, although I don't want to re-invent the wheel. Any feedback would be greatly
appreciated. I'll also be doing it without spending a squillion dollars.
See, I can be serious...but man have I got a headache

A jap blower will be the easiest and cheapest.
Just might be tricky getting it to fit under the lid.
For neatness and out right power a turbo would be hard to beat!
Then again - i am a dual carb man. What would i know!

I used to run a 1776 with a turbo in a Beetle a few years back,
I ran the turbo out of the engine bay (no heat problems) beside the gearbox with the intercooler on the other side.
I got Instant boost as quick as you floored the pedal, you were back in the seat. It only reved to 5000 rpm.
I drove it to Willow Bank in QLD in 1995 and ran 13.5 @103 mph over the 1/4, in a full weight car with radials, (even the spare), and drove it home
again over 2000 km and got 28-30 mpg.
Quiet a bit of work making it all fit, but it was nice to drive.

That setup looks spectacularly neat compared to anything else i've seen. If i did anything like this thats the look i'd like.

actually, due to it 'appearing' to take up not a lot of room, whats the chances of such a setup working in a squareback?

I was under the impression pressurising the carb on a vw was not the best. However after seeing your setup and how neat it is I think blow threw is
the way to go. What about centrifugal blowers anybody got info or thoughts on that. Any info on Daves setup would be great.

It is kind of hard to give info, as I made it all, The turbo was an IHI RHB6 with intergral wastgate, (Steve runs one of these too).
The intercooled I had was an alloy Saab 900 turbo one, there are a lot better ones around now. I made all the pipe work for the exhaust and Shimmo
made the inlet manifold for the Weber DMTT carb. The engine was a stock camed 1776
with a counterweighted crank and 6.7 to 1 compression.
I later changed to a mild Pauter cam, 044 heads and EFI, but it didn't make much more power.

there's a guy from Dalby with a yellow kalita buggy and a home made turbo 1600. turbo came from a ford transit van I think, blow through carb
design. Real low budget stuff, but it works.
Brad knows more about it than me, because he has just finished writing an article on it for the limited run "Manx Mania Magazine" that we
are producing.
I used to be a dreamer with no vw back in the days of australian vw mags, and Dave's car was one of the vw's I admired. That engine pic
posted above is burned in my memory

twin carbed?
what about running one with twin carbs rather than a single blow thru?
will that mean major power gains, or major headaches fitting it all in?

Hi
Turboing or supercharging is not something you go into without talking to a lot of people, gathering opinions and thoughts, thanks for putting up with
me years ago Dave. Dave, Chris, Shimo & Iain Halls all inspired me, I remember Daves car at the drags running very sweetly and quietly, the above
guys broke ground where the yanks feared to tread.
You will also need some basic skills in fabrication or cheap access to someone who does. I dont beleive anyone could sit here and write the answers to
every problem that you will come accross, the best thing to do is ask your questions in an open forum like this so that everyone can benifit and
learn, also if you can get to Nambucca or any other VW show, talk to people who have done it, most are willing to share information.
