[FS - NSW] 1979 Microbus, fully restored, 8 seater


For sale 1979 Microbus

Seller's Name – Robert and Emma McLean
Suburb / Post Code – Oberon, 2787, NSW, near Bathurst
Item Description including Brand – 1979 8 seat Microbus. Stock 2L engine
Condition – Excellent
Item Cost - $18 000 ono


Approximately 15,000 km ago the bus received a rebuilt stock 2L aircooled engine and reconditioned gearbox. Since then I have stripped the bus down, removed and treated any rust, and resprayed it in original VW colours Tomato Red and Pastel White acrylic lacquer. It was re-registered in December 2009 after an 18 month restoration.



Inside we installed a new headliner and new door and wall cards, new sun visors, new handbrake handle, new kick panels, an under-dash tray, new stereo and 4 speakers, and a cigarette lighter/power outlet. The original 8 seats are in excellent condition – some small tears, but they do not sag. The floor has the original rubber mats which are in a very good condition with only a few signs of wear. I also installed Dynamat along all the walls and doors, and over the engine bay. Inside is quiet, spacious, comfortable, clean, easy to use, and fun. The bus has compliance plates as an 8 seater and is registered as such.



The body has new door and window seals (except the windscreen and rear window, these rubbers were already in very good condition). The paint is not show-winning quality, but it looks great as it is very glossy and smooth. The spray painter where I bought the paint from was very impressed. I put a lot of time into rust-prevention so that it shouldn’t need any rust work for a long time. I also sought out a very late bay, as the full imports (1977,78,79) have galvanised bodies, significantly reducing the rust issues.



Underneath received new ball joints, new rear drums, shoes and brake cylinders, new master cylinder, new handbrake cables. I cleared out all the drain holes in the body, and brushed off mud deposits wherever I found them. I made backets from a pattern made from the original brackets to mount the rear mudflaps.



The bus is my daily driver to work. I cruise at around 90 km/h by choice. It will easily sit on 110 km/h on freeways, and just eats up most hills. Fuel efficiency is around 11 L / 100 km. Everything works as it should, including the heater. It starts first go every time. On the weekends it takes the whole family (we have 5 kids) wherever we need to go. There is space enough for a full grocery shop, including two large eskies and a pram, without compromising safety or comfort for all passengers. I have installed five baby-seat mounts which could easily be removed.



The vehicle has been restored to provide easy and fun, trouble-free, family motoring. This is one of the few where you will not need to do any immediate work to enjoy driving a kombi. It will be sold with the BUS-079 plates and NSW rego till December 2010.

Looking at all the ads for kombis on carsales and drive etc, and talking to plenty of people, and with our eBay experience, we've made a final price drop. It seems that there isn't much of a market for a restored bus at the moment.
I don't mind really, I am happy to keep it.

Not sure what's going on with the market but have noticed Kombis seem to be selling on Carsales either that or lack of interest and they are withdrawn and kept.
