Clutch cable tube??????????

Because I'm matching an early model pedal assembly to a late model floor pan I need to relocate (or do away with) the clutch tube in place at the moment.

However I've just put in the gearbox and cable and pedal assembly, and put the shift rod in, and it looks like I can get away with NOT needing the tube that the cable sits in. I just need to put a small length of tube at the back for the bouden(?) tube to butt up against.

The cable doesn't foul on anything, so is there another reason for needing the tube as well?

Steve,

The tube is to stop the cable from "rattling" and from rubbing against other items in the tunnel. There is quite a bend at the rear of the tunnel, if you don't have that piece then you may get serious wear at that point where the cable exits the tunnel.
I'am curious as to the position of your "tube" as I've sectioned a '63 and a '71 tunnel and the position is the same.
Check the "Inside a Bug" pics at my club site and please let me know if yours is different.
thanks

Thanks Grahame

My early pedal assembly has the hook for the clutch cable on the right hand side of the tunnel. The small steel plate that sits behind the pedal assembly has 3 grooves at the top for the tube to be positioned for welding or brasing (?). One of those groves lines up with the LH hook position, another groove lines up with my RH hook position. Both the 63 and 71 on your site have the tube over on the LHS.

I also noticed that the clutch tube has a fairly big bend down then up again. Yesterday when I put everything back together, the cable ran from the rear of the pan (opening of the old clutch tube) to the hook on the pedal assembly on the RHS of the tunnel without hitting anything. It looked like the cable cleared the shift rod by about 30-50mm.

Where the cable exits the rear of the tunnel I will insert a new piece of tube as mentioned so that the rubber sleeve (bouden tube ?) is in the right place and has the right amount of 'slack' in it.

It just puzzles me that VW put the cable in a tube and then bent the tube, rather than having the cable in a straight line.

:o

Steve,

Very interesting! I have had a lot of discussions with people in the US with LHD vehicles about that "notch" in the brace, and no one has been able to confirm its use!
Maybe I have not looked at very early cars, what year is your pedal assembly??
Can you provide me with a pic?
I would think that VW installed the tube, then welded the tunnel, then installed the cable.
BTY how will you install a new cable without the tube as a guide to get it to the rear of the tunnel? - now there's a good reason for the tube!
If the original tube is in place, can you break the front welds off at the brace, pull it to the other side and reweld in new position.

My pedal assembly is out of a '56 oval.

A pic? I'll try but without a digital camera it will be a while before I can post it here, but I will take a few pics.

Yesterday I put the cable through the tunnel with a long piece of skirting board. I taped the threaded end of the cable to it then fed it in from the front access hole.

I looked at trying to relocate the existing tube as you mention but the blob of solder / weld on the front cross brace plate thing-a-myjig was too much to try and muscle off, and can't get a grinder in there.

BTW the tube in the 56 floor pan was steel; the tube in my 70 floor pan is copper. It was a semi-auto that has been converted. But the tube lined up perfectly for the late model clutch hook.

Hi Steve,

I can wait for the photo! Would llike to be able to add it to the website (with your permission of course and credit)

I guess another way to move the tube, would be to cut a hole in the top of the tunnel, do the business, then weld up the hole.
Please check that tube with a magnet, I have seen some copper covered steel tubes!
Do you think the tube is original? I know that some of the semi-autos got a tube but I've also seen some that didn't get one!
Looks like I'm going to have to find a '56 to section - boy, will that upset a few!

Anyone got a spare '56???????

There is a pan off one sitting at the Nambucca Heads tip!

It's on the scrap metal heap, standing upright on its nose. I know cause that's where I tossed it off the trailer.

It was pretty rust damaged and the frame head had been welded on crooked, so not much good to anyone.
