I have seen a laptop with a 17 inch monitor on it and the thing was just too bloody huge. The idea with a laptop is portability, i'd go for
something smaller.

What a waste of MONEY ......... do you have any sort of idea what sort of computer you could build for $3000 ??
Those specs don't even touch the side of the box my specs came in and it was much less than $2999 + battery.
17" ......... I don't even remember what less than 19" looked like.
When it is all said and done Don't buy a laptop, they are over priced and pieces of Crap. I have a P4 with me now, in fact I am typeing on it via
a satelitte uplink. If you have to have one for work then that is fine, but if not buy a few desk tops and leave em all over the place, still save
$$$.
Have you ever worked on laptop... They suck compared to a desktop

One of the doctors at my work is looking to buy a laptop and has been bringing me in some examples of ones shes seen in the paper, one of which was
the above one.
I looked at it very quickly and told her never ever to buy this laptop!
They are basically selling it all on the 17" screen, which is just too huge to carry around on your lap. for another thing is has way too little
ram for 1) the price you are paying 2)the proccessor power its got and 3)the operating system it runs!
No battery???!!! do you know how much those things cost??!! what a jip!
if you want a laptop, i strongly suggest either a mac or a dell. their deals and machines are much more relaible and powerful for the price you
pay.
nothing but nothing beats a desktop for price and power!! |

Adz, we buy a heap of laptops for work. go for Toshiba, HP or Dell. 14" screen is big enough. Go fop one with CD rewrite, DVD at least 1 gig
prossesor 256k ram. And IBM hard drive.
I've had my current HP XE3 Omnibook for 3 years now and its been to hell and back (lots of travel , bouncing around in planes, carried around the
office , dropped and abused by my kids ect) and is still running fine.
I agree with Brad tho desk tops are way better.

okay
why not a desktop?
i have one now and its OK bout 3yrs old and cost me bout the same
im basically buying this for school and want it to last through this yr next and then into my uni course
the reason im looking at a laptop is the conveinience of being able to pack it up and a desktop for the same price had allmost exactly the same
specs.
ill check out the Dell or HP and post some more for some opinions

laptops are great dont get me wrong but if ur a tech head with pc's like i try to be  when you wanna update ( read pull apart) they are a bit how do you say "tight" to work with, also for that much money you
could get a better desk computer but then again your really paying for the convinience of being able to take it place arent you ?
all in all if you got the use for it get one if not buy a new desk pc and spend the rest on your VW |

Laptop v desk top
If you don't need a laptop, don't get one. They are for portability and you pay for that. I would like a laptop but have no need for one
other than vanity. Therefore I have a reasonable home computer and a top work computer.
If you decided you need a portable computer investigate further into what you need it for and decided on make from that. For example the other
teachers that have a need for laptops are Art teachers and Social Science teachers like myself for field and internet research. As a result they all
have chosen iMac. I don't know why but as a guess it because they interface with the schools server well and manage large files and graphics
easily.
I prefer to write my research down on paper that way I type up whats important and don't end up with heaps of crap.

Looks OK Adz, we are buying Dells at the moment. Mainly stripped down ones for use on a network and emailing function off site.
I would go for the 14" screen. If it has Smaller over all dimentions than the 15" one. Portability remember. Try using a 15 to 17" lap
top on public transport. Not good.
My Omnibook has a TV out port so I can plug it into a normal TV RCA video in plug if I want a really big screen or play DVD's

As someone who sells PCs I have to say dont go with the laptop option unless you have to.
I have sold (and bought) various brands over the years and now generally I refuse to sell them.
The level of support you get once they have your money is virtually nil and they are extremely difficult to repair yourself.
If you must have a laptop for school them buy one of the entry level ones that you can pick up for about $1500 ish and spend the rest on a decent
desktop you should be able to get a good one for about $1500 especially if you reuse your monitor.
take a look here http://www.pc-club.com.au for low cost options - but if your not in
NSW make sure you get the onsite warranty option.
(I will be buying the hl86 with my insurance payout - if it ever turns up)

- If you are at school and then going to Uni you do NOT NEED a laptop. You have too much money if you feel that you do. Say you study IT at uni, then
you are gunna need to use the uni computers to get the software.
If you are paying $3000 for a desktop with the specs you listed above. Then I will happily sell you one with those specs for $2800 and be so far in
front it would make you sick. I am unsure where you are getting your prices from but I STRONGLY suggest you shop a little smarter as you are getting
ripped off something rotten.
At the end of the day I am sure you will do what you want and probably buy one. If you read every response on here the advice is the same, if you
don't HAVE to have one then don't get one. This advice is coming from those of us who HAVE to have them and don't actually have to pay
for them. I have 3 year onsite warranties on my Toshiba Laptops and it is still a PITA with the amount of down time they have.
There is no such thing as a good laptop. YOu pay heaps of dollars for an underspec machine and they offer little reliability. Yse some people do get
lucky but most do not. If I had to have one then I would go imac if interface was not a problem.
In short I would get over the coolness issue of a laptop buy a kick ass desktop and take half the time to process stuff.
