wa rat q's
my friend has an old mustard yellow beetle lying around he offered to me, i wouldnt mind giving it a paint job and fitting some cycle guards. not
really interested in beam extensions or chops, just a simple facelift.
so does anyone know if, in WA it is legal to fit cycle guards?
also, are you allowed to chop the front and rear apron?
ideally i'd like to go mint green or matte blue, black wheels/chrome caps and whitewalls. i'd also like to avoid any sort of engineering or pits
inspections if possible. |

go to licensingoffice on welshpool road, the WA technical department is there, you can speak to someone who will give you a very good idea of what you
can / cannt do! you'll need a permit, you can the forms there too!!
PS take as many pics and info as you possibly can, they aren't very switched on in the VW dept!!

Hi caibs.
What you are proposing to do, I'm already doing.
I need to fix the rust in the body, having sorted out the pan.
It'll be reassembled without mudguards, with cycle guards and headlights in buckets etc.
I sent in a form a few weeks ago and I've heard nothing from them yet, but I'm going ahead anyway as I'm sure it will not need an engineer and only
a simple inspection.
Get a form from your local rego office and tell that you will keep most of the car stock.
If you intend to "hot up" the engine. Don't tell them until you have had the cycle guards bit inspected. Get it inspected a mechanically stock
standard car and then play with it later.
I'm going to fit an Empi dress up kit to the engine and the only engine mod that I'm going to do.
Cycle guards are legal, but they must comply with the rules. What they are, I haven't found out yet.
Keep in touch I'd like to work with you on this as we would work better as a team against "them".
Jon is right. Record with pictures everything that you do to show them that it was done and that it was done well.
If you want louvers, contact the Hot Rod builders. They will know about them.
For new steel cycle guards, contact Stretchforming Technologies on (07) 3200 1098. http://www.mudguard.com.au They will cost about $30 each plus freight. You will need the exact dimensions when you order
them.
See the thread below this one called west aus volksrod, by stoppa.
Call me on 9342 8703. I'd like to talk with you.
Richard.

thanks for the reply richard. i'd like to follow how your application for modification goes. especially the rules on cycle guards. i have no
intention of touching the mechanical aspect of the car. my other car would outperform it by leaps and bounds. i'd just like to build a cool daily.
i'm even considering not applying for any sort of approval at all, just doing it and worrying about it later. i guess ill see how you go with your
way first though, if you have no drama's doing it the "right" way, i will follow suit.
cheers mate
