1971 superbug 1800 for 1966 beetle
I have an 1800 super bug not registered but ready for it, with a fully restored engine with Kranky kit starter. Starts first time every time even when
left standing for two months. Has no rust at all and interior very good with Porsche dash . Probs (to me) are that it has flared arches and many not
original parts. Actually its just the wide guards that I dont like. I have the opportunity of a straight swap for a 1966 1300 ( engine stuffed and
fair bit of deep rust) with original 6 volt electrics. It is registered for 6 months but this will be taken off.
It does appeal to me as this is original and I dont need it in a hurry, and would like to take on most labour myself. What do people think? I will add
pics later of both cars.

Whoever fitted them done a great job. And I would be happy to give them to you with the wide wheels. If you were prepared to fit your guard and your
standards to mine :-)
Really umming and arring about this swap? There is a lot of work needed on the 66, and none on 71. But from what I gather the 66 model is more sought
after?

I guess it comes to personal taste. I have a 69 even though I wanted an earlier model however it is stock standard and with front wheel discs and a
few other comforts above a pre 67 I am happy.
You could replace the guards put standard wheels or at least not as wide.

Would like to re bump this as I would like more opinions. The superbug is , as I said, ready to rego and really needs nothing more spent on it. What
gets me is that it wont get used if I keep it. The young guy who wants to swap will be using it daily.
If I do swap for the stock 66. That will also just sit around and will maybe (if future provides an alternative engine) be used that way instead.
Otherwise it will just be worked on slowly. I really dont know if I am getting better deal or him, considering the state of the 66.
Dont have pic of 66 still but has some deep rust externally and bad paint, with a pretty ordinary interior and stuffed engine.
Whereas paint job not great on superbug but ok and rest is really neat. Including a superb 1800 engine with Cranky starter

Pictures shown are not recent as indicators now match and has original steering wheel fitted as well as proper handbrake grommet (without othersize
bolts sticking out, and handbrake handle. But gives a fairly accurate portrayal of bug.
Really wish I knew how to add a poll as I would just leave the decision to that.

agreed, whats the 66 actually got going for it aside from being an early?
they may have more character visually but they have dinosaur brakes, suspension and electrics which isnt something that appeals with a daily driver
especially one in city traffic
also the rust could be far worse once you start prodding
i say stick with the devil you know, stock gaurds are a quick swap away

me agree with the joel.
Supers have the best suspension of any beetle anyway... there is alot you can do to make it have a nicer ride for a reasonable price.... you can
expect to spend alot more on an "early". stick with it mate. 
have a bit of a look around SBO (superbeetlesonly) and germanlook forums, you will find you then have a goal of what you want your beetle to be like.
