[FS - NSW] J&S buggy
For sale, J&S lwb buggy.
I went to Canberra for a rally a few weeks back and had a stark realization. The car does not fit in with where I want to go re motorsport and
rallying. I have also lost the time/$$$/desire to work on it and take it offroad. So, save yourself some trouble and cash by buying something that is
finished and ready to drive.
SPECS:
68 J&S buggy. Raised, lengthended for LWB pan. with 4 seats (cobra classic front buckets/rear bench) and baby harness mount. Twin
rollover hoops front and rear. Full soft top
1960 LWB pan. Volksconversions disc brake Link pin frontend with raised bumpstops, twin adjusters/IRS rear, type 3 arms, 24mm torsion
bars and drums (wide 5). 19mm whiteline rear sway bar, brake bias valve, jamar single handle turning brake. Extensive subframe and kafer cup style
bracing of chassis horns and shock towers. Toughdog shocks front and back. Fully sorted chassis for khanas and dirt work.
Subaru EJ25 DOHC and stock ECU with less than 120k on it. Shortened sump, Unifilter and custom exhaust. Volkconversions
plate/flywheel and kombi 1800 clutch. 091 kombi box [built by Schimo] with 0.77 top gear, moly pinion nut, vanagon 4 spidergear diff. Urethane
mounts.
Full rego and engineered.
6 15x6 steel offroad wheels imported from the US. 6 locally made sunraisier offroad wheels. All up, 3 sets of tyres on rims,
road/offroad/rally.
Some spares.
Driven but not thrashed. The car is good enough to produce fastest times in khanas and has run an honest 15.8 ET at WSID (could go quicker too).
Have spent $35k plus.
Make me a offer. Will consider all offers above $10k

Hell dude ,
The old J & S may not be the quickest thing to hit khana's etc , but at least it's unique and not just another P510 , or 180b SSS like every
other dick is running .
I would think your biggest problem is understeer under power and this can be fixed but you must let the front end walk which is not possible while
your still running snubbers .
Sorry Pete , not trying to bag your sale but you love this car and have put many hours into it's development so i as one would be disipounted ( shit
you know hwta i mean ) if you sell Zac
Don't let body work get in the way of real suspension travel

Actually, the car is awesome at khanas and hardly understeers at all anymore... which is a miracle really. I'd go as far to say that it's the best
handling buggy I've ever seen. The issue is, it doesn't fit into any class in proper rallies and to get it to the stage where it would be
rally-ready would take more money and time than is justifiable considering what I've spent already. Added to that, it used to be good for business,
but I just don't drive it that much anymore and I don't enjoy it that much either. I like working on it, but I really don't have the time, hence,
the desire to do that anymore. And when I went to Canberra to watch a rally recently, I realised, old cars are slow and expensive for what they are. I
just don't love it anymore. I don't hate it, but owning a buggy takes passion and the passion is gone. I'm feeling similarly about all aircoolers
at the mo actually.
... and I won't tell you what I'm thinking of buying coz you'd all scream blasphemy.
But it's a great car. not perfect. a few little things to do, but's a great car. just not for me anymore.

This thing has been for sale periodically for several years
Pete you have always bagged air cooled stuff to justify your own project
Why don't you bring the buggy up to Valla to show how well it handles

fair cop Johnny re how many times I've put it up, but this time it's going.
re bagging aircoolers; I love aircoolers as much as the next guy on here, but I'm also realistic enough to know that they are not a cheap performance
option, especially when it comes to racing. You've either got to be dedicated (and I don't have the time) or rich (and I don't have the money).
I've looked seriously into building an aircooled rally car over the last 2-3 years and came to the conclusion, rightly, that it would take $30k plus
just to get near the faster datsuns around (which are not that quick). Just to put things in perspective, $30k could buy me a competitive and rally
ready wrx/evo. The only sphere of motorsport where VWs make any real impact is hillclimbing... and even then, only within certain classes. Pete
Gumley's days are over as champion now people are using bike engines and monocoque style open wheelers. Yes I know there are the drags but really,
most people are just racing other aircoolers there. Nothing wrong with it, but there it is. So as I said, I love aircoolers, but I just can't justify
the $$$/time required. Sorry.
re valla; sorry, no valla for me. working, which is kinda central to the issue really.
just to clarify, I'd consider offers round the $14k range.
