flames coming from exhaust (update)
1600tp motor webber single dual throat carbi, modified monza exhaust.
no loss of power in car
only backfires when you stop accelerating and when it is warm
will give it a full adjustment and service this weekend but any ideas would be great
mate thinks it has nitro but no such luck. |

Did it "ever" run good?
i mean are we trying to fix something or are we trying to get something to work properly
If it only just started i would suggest a hole in the exhaust or loose clamp/flange connections
If it always did it i would suggest it is rich and needs rejetting

"flames coming from exhaust"
I have only one word for you - "Respect"
Seriously, though I would start with the simple things including timing, valve adjustment and idle mixture.

It used to run well
had to get one of the exhaust pipes welded back on recently.
I think it might have started after that but aren't sure . |

i would say they didnt weld up properly or the exhaust wasnt put back on properly
First check for a leak around the weld and seals

I just HAD to have a look at this thread when I saw the title !!
Mine did the same thing. On the way home from work, I have a 100 k/hour zone that comes up to a big roundabout, where I turn off. The 100 zone is
only about 1/2 kilometer long and it comes off a 60 zone, so, I'm fair into the little bug !. As I backed off into the roundabout, I would get a
foot long yellow/blue flame out of the tailpipe (as reported by following workmates). I thought "that's pretty cool !", and
didn't worry about it, kept doing it every day. UNTIL, discovered that the vac advance in the diz had become almost seized, and the timing was
all over the place. Car ran great all the same though. Fixed that, and NO MORE FLAMES !.... bugger !

The freezing weather in Brissie killed my battery the day before Valla.
Put in a new battery and without making any other changes Pearl runs perfectly. The best she has run for ages, no backfiring the flames are gone and
idles well.

A nearly-dead battery means poor and late spark at the plugs, especially if the wiring, coil, dizzy, points, and HT leads are old. Poor spark means
inefficient/incomplete/late combustion, which can result in... flames!
You've got a new battery, so if your wiring, coil, dizzy, points, and HT leads are old, now's the time to replace them to ensure you
continue to get good spark.

Freezing weather... what?????
Bugged Again, "The freezing weather in Brissie killed my battery..."
What?????????? You've got no idea, 'freezing'. It's at the bottom of the scale, not about half way up.
:P
Come down to Tassie, sometime.

I always wanted to go to Tassie but then I saw the average temps, no thanks.
Being cold is relative, we have been having temps below zero before valla and 20 degrees during the day. We are geared towards warm weather but when
you wake in the morning and the thermometer in the kitchen reads 0 degrees even we freeze. By the way the fridge was 4.
I know what cold is. I went skiing in Austria a while back and in the 10 days the warmest it got was -18 at lunchtime and that was the last day. the
thermometer at the hotel went to -30 and it was off the scale.
The leads coil etc is new so we are all happy now, unfortunately too late for Valla but maybe next time. |

i read in a magazine once that the best way u could get a flaming exhaust was to install a sparkplug in the back of the tailpipe with a remote switch.
get 2 - 3 foot flames.
